2NthreequarterSFPD022 Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Finally after thirty-eight years I can build an SMT 1961 Corvette, without it being the near mint one in my collection that I would like to save. I can't find the model cars magazine thread where one or two contributors recommended using mineral spirits to disassemble old kits, but I wanted to tell them THANK YOU! I'm unsure of what brand I used, because the label slipped off, but I purchase it from Lowe's in the pint sized plastic bottle. About the size of a fifth of alcohol. I used an old short bristled stiff brush to apply liberal amounts to the contact points and it worked like magic. And it didn't harm the sixty-four year old chrome nor plastic. A little soakin' a little wigglin' an down she she went. Broke apart with just gentle pressure after approximately thirty minutes of brushing on doses of mineral spirits and wiggling the parts free. I rinsed everything in warm soapy water using Dawn liquid soap and a soft sponge, rinsing it under warm tap water. NEXT PHASE: An isopropyl bath 2
