rattle can man Posted August 23 Posted August 23 Has anyone checked the fit of the old Monogram 5 window coupe against the new tool Revell? I'm contemplating how to un-chop one of the Revell kits. There are the different roof treatments from an original kit, so the options could end up interesting.
Smitty Posted August 24 Posted August 24 (edited) They are different scales, the Monogram kit is 1/24. The Revell Model A kits are 1/25. I’m not sure if that’s an issue or not. Edited August 24 by Smitty

The old Monogram kit is noticeably larger. It's getting spendy, too. You could un-chop one of the recent coupes using pillar sections from another one. Nothing but careful measuring and cutting and fitting required. 1

Fat Brian Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Unchopping it shouldn't be too bad, the roof section is a separate piece so its easy to work with. Since they're great kits and you will probably build more than 1 anyway use the top section from the second kit to make one standard height roof and one super chopped one. I chopped mine an additional 3 or 4 inches, that is about enough to bring one back to stock if you put the long sides together. Cut one roof close to the bottom of the pillars and the other close to the roof and switch the tops to the other bottom. Here's a picture of mine, you can see the seam where the roof meets the body through the window. The hardest cut is on the back, the rear window is kind of high so the cuts have to angle down to meet the side cuts. 2 1

This is exactly how I did the master for both a stock height and "more" chopped roof sections for Altered States back when the Revell kit came out. Sadly he no longer produces the resin roofs, but you can make your own by creative cutting and splicing like Brian describes. Here are a couple builds I did using the resin copies. 3
OldNYJim Posted yesterday at 04:43 AM Posted yesterday at 04:43 AM Those are both cool, @Mr. Metallic…but I LOVE the second one. WAY cool!
Ulf Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago (edited) There are some comparisons between Monogram's old 1930 five-window/sports coupe and ICM's new super-detailed kit. That kit bash could be nice(LOT of work). See page 5 https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/178080-icm-124-model-a-phaeton/ Edited 21 hours ago by Ulf 1
