I came up with an idea for my drift build that would require a "CF" hood, that had some paint and some raw "CF". So I'd like to know if anyone has had success, applying a decal to a hood, then masking off a section of decal and painting over part of it. I am not so sure how this will work, but cannot think of another way to acheive the look I am after....

Any and all advice is appreciated....

Pictures of what you have in mind will help alot.

However, I would apply the decal on the hood first, then clear coat it. Clear coating it will protect it from harm. Let the clear coat dry for a day or two. Then do your masking and painting. Then when your painting is satisfactory, clear coat again to cover the paintwork.

If you attempt to mask the CF decal first, the masking tape will tear the decal when you remove it. Clear coating will prevent that.

Len, I've NEVER done this so I wouldn't take this as hard facts. BUT if you use some low tack tape, maybe like the Blue painters tape, it MIGHT NOT pull the decal off. All I can think of is the low tack stuff. Maybe you could try some "Magic Masker"? Just brush it on over the decal. Jus throwin out some ideas Bro, I hope you can use 'em. :D

I've occasionally had the blue-tape peal off some paint. So I have no doubt it'll peal off decal. Thus, clear coating it first.

I thought an ACME member did this with a 70 Monogram Trans Am. Re-painted the decals to match the shaker scoop. Used Tamiya paints. Wish I could remember. I did save his tutorial and printed it out. IF interested I can certainly re-type it here for you. The Trans Am turned out beautiful as did the decals and of course they were a direct match to the shaker.

You can do it, but you have to bury it under clear. I have done this in the past to fix some small issues that I have on some race cars that I did. I would suggest using Future Floor Polish and put on three coats. Let it dry completely between each coat. Then use a low tac tape like Tamiya and it should work fine. Stay away from the blue painters' tape as it has a tendency to be able to pull up paint if it's not completely cured.
