modelcars65ChevImpala003.JPG.2452279be7b5ac41b1bf94ad01d914ff.JPGRun into a problem guys. I've got these terrible pin BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH spots around the wheel arch and along one of the body trims. So, is this too much paint? I've started to rub the paint back as you can see and in places I'm down to the primer. My question is, rub it back more and then add primer, add rub the whole body back and reprime. Opinions please. What I have been doing is for color, two light coats and then a heavy/wet coat, is this correct? Thanks

Hey Don. I can’t say for certain what caused the spots, but I’d start over, if it’s Tamiya lacquer, submerge the whole body in isopropyl alcohol, it will strip off the paint. I had to do this with one of my previous builds, takes a couple of days, but comes off mostly, the more stubborn parts you can scrub with an old toothbrush.

Probably solvent pop. Basically the next coat traps the solvent of the previous and it tries to work its way out causing this. Like Stuart said, strip it and start over is a good idea. Too heavy with paint, too soon with the next coat can cause this. The type and brand of paint can be very helpful for others to identify the issue and give advice. If you sand, you might lose some detail, like the emblem or the wheel arch trim.

Hi Stu, Isop should be here today, had to order it in, unfortunately couldn't go out to get it, I'll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, I did the RX7 windscreen tint band, I couldn't get the old stuff off, did the best I could, not sure if you saw that post. I tried to send you a PM but for whatever reason, the system said I couldn't.

Leave it in the iso bath for a couple of days, a toothbrush should deal with the stubborn patches. Should look a bit like my Olds here when done. IMG_2865.jpeg.cfe28491ed28908f67767377548ae4f2.jpeg👍🏻

Thanks Stu, I did a bit of work(sanding) whilst I was waiting for isop to come, so hopefully won't take too long.

SO, I guess when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. Managed to get the Impala repainted but not without an error, the paint on the roof (this time), LHR was not good, being polite here. so I took to it   with the W&D and you guessed it, yep through to the primer, I'm being polite calling myself DH. Please check the pic and tell me it's repairable. Thanks.

The good news is I polished the Mercury and it's looking okay.

Hmmm. It’s a tough one. You probably don’t want to strip it again, so I’d give the affected area a quick shot of blue to mitigate the lighter primer colour, let it dry then give the whole body a couple of coats. Hopefully, the bare primer area will be unnoticeable after this. What paint are you using Don?

Thanks Stu, I really have messed this one up. Tamiya TS51 Racing blue

I thought I might be able to as you have advised, lay a coat over the bad patch, and try to polish it in. Does that make sense?

You can try it but it’s a dark colour and may need a couple of layers to hide the bare primer patch. Do you plan to put clear coat over it?

At the moment, not sure, the rest of the car looks okay quite a good finish. I was going to polish it and see how it looked, then decide on the clear coat. I'm close to the point where I think I should drop this, I'm getting negative about it.

The paint is a sort of iridescent (spelling?), I thought it was a solid colour when I did the spoon test, that's what it looked like, probably because of my poor eyesight. I think I might be better off to sand it  back and try another colour - repaint it completely. Not strip it, sand it back and maybe should I give it another light coat of primer and then colour.

No harm in that Don. I’ve done it myself several times. If it’s giving you the sh#ts, wrap it in a soft cloth and put it back in the box and revisit it later. I’ve been guilty of pressing on with models that were being a pain to build and making more mistakes and then just binning them in frustration. Your Impala is definitely fixable, but yeah, I’d put it to one side for now. That 49 Mercury is looking nice and I hope to see it posted on the under glass section soon. 😊👍🏻

Thanks Stu. Yep I think I might give it a rest for today. The Merc I'm quite happy with right now. The build has been a bit of a challenge, AMT just  put too much Cr*P in the kit. Tape recorders, Phone, Tv, it just gets too confusing. I've just got back to it, the bonnet hinges had one broken when I took it from the box, so I need to repair that finish the interior and DONE! The bonnet fix is tiny and fragile, so if I'm successful with the fix, it will need to sit probably until tomorrow to make sure it is fixed and solid.
