Black parts, White paint

Question is this:

I wanna make a car with a partly white interior. The parts are black though. What's a good way (use of primer etc) to get the whitest result?

 

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Good question. Whatever you do, it will take more than one coat.

Maybe start with a light gray like Tamiya has and then their white over that.

I would start with a white primer.  I haven't ever tried this but that is where I would start.  Probably duplicolor white primer.  That seems to cover well for me. (depending on what paint you are using over it of course)

i'd use grey primer and treat the white primer as the top coat. if you start with white you'll end up with very thick paint

Why? Is the gray primer more opaque than white primer?  Wouldn't 2 coats of white primer have same thickness as a coat of gray and a coat of white?

Tamiya TS-101 Base White. By far the best white primer I've ever used. Very pigment dense, covers quickly, dries to a slight semigloss sheen. 

It's worth seeking out. Their regular white primer is quite good, but nobody's white primers I've tried even comes close to this stuff. Black plastic? No problem. Worth the $$, it saves you in the long run by conserving the paints applied over it.

i find the white takes more coats to cover. a single coat of grey will cover black but it can take 2 or 3 with white to get the same coverage. a single coat of the white will cover the grey, plus using grey first shows up any parts needing a bit more work better than white would. i should point out i use automotive primers

Got it... how about Zinsser stain block primer? I've used it on water stained dry wall. Or silver paint?

Practice on some scrap first.

I wish the Tamiya primers would return to Canada. I've been intrigued by TS-101 Base White since I first heard of it a few years ago. When the Tamiya primers disappeared from the shelves, I stocked up so I'm good for a few years, but could never find the Base White.

I think I'll visit a hobby shop tomorrow and look for some Tamiya TS-101.

i'm from Holland, we still have the Tamiya paints. This one, I never looked for it so fingers crossed.

I'll be looking for some TS-101 myself. I have 2 shops that should have it.

Check out the build I did on a 67 Impala, it was the black one from Supernatural. I used grey Tamiya primer, then mica silver and clear red over it.  Now, I had thought of going to a white car, vs the finish I did.  

I will be building this kit again, and will go white. Will use Tamiya Primer, Tamiya Mica Silver, and then Pure white.  Will post pics for this when I get it on the bench.

I just shot some TS-101, it does cover well. Better than the white TS primer I was using.

It has a little gloss to it. I have some red putty that it almost covered. Ill give it another coat.

One coat of grey primer followed by a light coat of white primer before white paint. You can skip the white primer, but you will need a couple more coats of white paint. I use testors grey primer followed by two coats of testors white enamel spray paint with good results.

I’ve got on REALLY well with this Army Miniature stuff lately…HUGE can for similar price to Tamiya’s primer, designed for plastic models, covers ANYTHING in one coat, dries fast, lays on thin…can’t recommend it enough.

Their black is great too…and I want to try the tinted primers that they carry also
