Removing Bare Metal Foil

I acquired a glue bomb of Italeri's 1/12 scale Fiat Mefistofele. The main problem so far is original builder used bright gold bare metal foil on all the parts that should be brass and didn't burnish it out smooth. I thought maybe I could remove it by applying tape and pulling it up but had no luck. It was probably applied over 20 years ago so the adhesive is pretty well set up. The only thing I found that works is scraping with an xacto knife then cleaning remaining adhesive off with lacquer thinner. This method is pretty hard on the plastic surface.

Does anybody have the magic answer as to how to get this stuff off.
