hey guys

like the title says, i am building my very first gasser

are yall proud of me ?

this will be a rather slow build because i have a 79 trans am coming in the mail that needs to be done for my father in laws birthday

(coming up some time this month i think  )

at any rate, here is some background info on this car

i bought a lot of 6 cars of ebay planning to keep one and sell the other 5 for what i paid for it (basically getting the one kit for free)

as i was putting the kits back on the bay i was reading the instructions so i could give the best description possible

when i came across this

IMG00021-20090616-1918.jpg

i showed the wifey and she said i just had to build it

(part 537 in case you missed it)

at any rate, i noticed this model came with the optional gasser parts so that what i am going to build it as

my first point of buisness was to find a good set of rims

in the partsbox i found this set i got in a trade

(cant remember who it was but im sure they will come forward)

the rims came from a diecast so i had to made some adjustments

luckely for me the model has a metal rear axle so making it fit will be simple

( the rim on the right is only for comparision)

you can also see i had to bring up the rear suspension to make it fit

IMG00027-20090619-1701.jpg

i also had to cut open the rear wheel wells to fit those massive drag rims

the inside of the model had a pattern cast into it for this very purpose but the slicks im using are much larger then the ones that came in the kit so i had to go well past that

(luckily my wife bought me a dremel for christmass several years ago)

here is a shot of the wheel wel

(this was my first time using 1/2 round styrene to make the wheel wels look stock

(because we all know how those 32x14 tires were on option on the 56 victoria)

speaking of which, it will most likely have a blown boss 429 in it :)

IMG00026-20090619-1659.jpg

now, keep in mind guys, this is my very first gasser so any adives or parts you want to give will be apreciated B)

Them Wheels and Tires are from a $12 Walmrt toy. It was a 1970 Plymouth GTX, but can also get them from a 1978? Monte Carlo. I have a set im gonna be using on my 1967 Coronet.

cool

they were pretty easy to modify

i cut the stems of with a dremel , the fronts i cut off completely, the rears i cut flush with the back of the rim

on the front i superglued on some 1/8 styrene tubing

i then drilled out the tubing to fit the stock front spindles

on the back i used the same 1/8th tubing but left the stock I/D because it is a perfect fit for the kits metal axle

i filled in the gap between the tube and the stem with modeling putty

im building this car slightly different then my usual order, im building this one from the ground up

(normally i build the engine first)

i will post mock up pictures later today on the fron ride height (im leaving the rear where it is at)

the kit has the option of raising the front like a real gasser or leaving it stock

which brings up this question, on a 1:1, ehy do they raise the front ?

In the 60's the front end would have been hiked up to aid traction to the rear tires. But the rears in the 60's would have been alot more narrow than what you have mocked up there!! I would leave it with the rake you have in the mock up.

i just happened to have those wide rims laying around and i thought it would be a good idea ;)

guess it wont be 100% era correct (that will give me some leadway with the engine aswell)

the rake in that first picture is without any front suspension parts, the fenders are basically leaning on the top of the tires

so its not really an option :D

these are the two easyest option

first of stock

IMG00042-20090621-1527.jpg

or with the raised front end

IMG00043-20090621-1528.jpg

i kinda like both ways but im leaning towards the raised suspension because it almost looks like the car is taking off already (plus its the wifeys favorite)

Both look very cool and that is a tough call

decided to go with the raised suspension just to keep it authentic

i also added some coil overs to the rear suspension because the stock shock didnt fit after i raised the springs some

Ya can never go wrong with the "wifey's" favorite, my choice also...

in our household "wifey" is more commonly refered to as "She Who Must Be Obeyed!", and her opinion and desires have crept into a few of my builds.

I look forward to following your progress on this build

somehwere along the lines the "booty" principle turned into the "sleeping in the bed rather then on the couch" principle

at any rate, i did stick to it just to keep the peace

ill be reshaping the rear fenders a little tonight, it seems like the wheels dont sit perfectly centered now that the rear suspenion is actually attached

those look like the drag wheels i sent you! are they?

nice job! i will be watching, i can't wait to see her finished!

most likely , i know i got them in a trade together with some other stuff including a set of lambo wheels but im not sure who i traded them with

the project has been on hold because i had to build the firebird, i should have that done this friday and then its back to our regular scheduled building ;)

i did manage to slap some putty on there and sand a line or two

i also worked out a trade for the engine it will be a supercharged late model big block :)

i havent decided on a scoop or not , i might just keep it low profile

finally got some work done on her again

the powerplant ( nowhere near done but getting there)

its a ford 427 CI with a blower on it

(thanks MikeMC)

the valve covers are the custom ones from the kit

the wires are 22# beading wire

( i have some 32# but i dont have a drill for it and this looks good to me)

the distributor is a peice of 1/8th tubing drilled out to accept all 6 wires ;)

im still up in the air on what to do for exhaust, the stock ones wont fit,

the ones that came with the engine wont clear the inner fenders and i have none in my partsbox that do <_<

stay tuned for some bad scratchbuilding

as always header donations are welcomed and apreciated

Good looking Ford Vic..

I like it with the nose up stance..

The bigger the spark plug wire, the less resistance. :D

thanks

it seems period correct to put some weight on the rear end :D

and it was the wifeys choice so i pretty much had too :)

as for the wires, lets just say they're the 8 MM magstars like i had on my cougar ;)

No problem bud...but I sent you a V8...where did the other cylinders go??

And for the headers get a roll of armature wire or solder...simple to do!!

that is a V8

underneath the heads it has 4 cylindrs on each side

it also has 4 plugwires and 4 exhaust ports per bank

(you can count the plugwires)

i think you might be looking at the little lines that run vetically down the blowerhousing (the ones i painted blue) and mistaking those for plug wires maybe ?

I know that FE..but for it to run...yur gonna need 8 wires plus the coil ;):P;)

lol, now i get it

that was a mere typo

the 1/8th tube does take 8 wires

(no coil wire yet, i might ad it laterkeep in mind this is only my 4th model with wires)

funny thing is

first time i made that dizzy i had it all glued into place , painted and everything when i noticed it only had 7 wires

at any rate

im stuck in philly for the day so im hoping to get the body nice and smooth today

After reading the post on your engine, I searched for "beading wire". Is that 22 gauge or .022? Can you provide additional info on where you got it? I keep buying ignition wire from Scale Dreams and/or Model Car Garage. Their ignition wire has a pliable metal center that stays when you bend it.

i bought mine on ebay

it is basically electrical wire so it does have the metal inside (i stripped it to fit in the distributor)

and it wil hold any form you give it

it is advertised as being 22 gauge and i guess ill take thier word for it

it is sold as a set of 6 little coils, totaling 100 foot

i am not sure about board regulations on ebay links so i will PM you one instead of putting it in here

best part is....i paid $3.50 for it shipped to my door (i figured for that price it was worth a shot)

my only regret is that it does not come in black, but then again, i didnt specifically asked for black so who knows :D
