Custom Hearse Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 What causes white paint to turn yellowish? I have to re-paint my Dodge Magnum because the paint has yellowed, and I want to keep it from doing it again. What can I do to stop it?
Custom Hearse Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 Did you try and clearcoat over it with something? Certain clearcoats will leave a yellow/amber tint over white bases..... Other than that, I don't think I can help here... I hadn't clearcoated it yet. It's been sitting in a box for awhile. Is you'r white an enamel Marshall? White enamel such as Testors in the bottles are really bad for that. I clearcoated the last one I did with Testors white enamel with Tamiya clear acrilic. It hasn't yellowed yet ,,painted like,,8 or 9 years ago. I find acrilics and laquers don't yellow nearly as much as enamels. It was white enamel. I've got got some Dupli-Color white lacquer I can use. The black is also enamel. Do I need to re-prime the white, or do you think I can spray the lacquer over the enamel? and also do you think there will be a problem using Testors Ultra Clearcoat over both paints? I've used the Testors on Dupli-color with no problem, but never on enamel.... Thanks for your input guy's!
Custom Hearse Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 You'd be best to strip the whole thing if you want to use laquer. If you spray it on the enamel it'll wrinkle up like an ten year old rasin. LOL If you don't want to strip it, you can put acrilic over it with no problems. Thanks for the help Steve. I really appreciate it!

I have to re-paint my Dodge Magnum because the paint has yellowed, and I want to keep it from doing it again. What can I do to stop it? My 2 cents One more option If it were me, I'd get some Tamiyia Pure White #TS-26. Lays down and covers beautifully, and is not a "HOT" paint like DupliColor and a few others. I'd want to build up the white carefully. Lightly wet sand your white. Wash it with soap and water. Rinse it really good. Let it dry over night. Tape it off to cover the black, then shoot a light coat, wait 5 minutes and spray a second coat, that's glossy, but not wet. At that point, check for "WRINKLING". If it does, strip it. You would have anyway, but this is a way of trying to save it, and you can use what's in the can for the do over. If it doesn't wrinkle, let it dry over-night, and do al 2-coat, light, and medium to glossy, but not wet. Let it sit however long you usually do, and rub it out. Tamiyia rubs out nicely. You may save it - dave

You may save it - dave Thanks Dave. I wanted to see what would happen if I did spray Dupli-Color over the enamel (I figured like you said Dave, that if it wrinkled I' was gonna have to strip it anyway), so I used the tailgate that I painted (I've got 3 more to use if it goes bad). I sprayed 2 really light coats on it, and then waited about 15 minutes, and sprayed a heavy coat on it. It came out good, with no wrinkles whatsoever. So I taped up the body, and painted it the way (keeping my fingers crossed the whole time), and it came out good also. Thanks Dave and Steve for your help! I also painted the hood to see if the Testors Ultra clear will work o.k. on enamel. It looks like it was a success!
