Harry P. Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 My reasons for building these days is vastly different from when I was 18. I guess the contest guys will never quite understand the non-contest guys and vice versa! But to answer my own question... if I ever was to enter a contest, I think I actually would be drawn to one that offered a pretty substantial prize (cash or merchandise).

Harry, Believe me , I understand where the non contest guys stand , I did'nt enter ny first contest until I was in my mid forties. As much as yourself , Bri and I( to name a few ) have busted each others stones on this subject , I wish that you would go to a show and see what we are all talking about ! I think that it would give you a brand new perspective on the subject . Actually , I feel that everybody that comments on the threads on contests , judging , etc , should first attend a couple of shows before tossing in the proverbial two cents. In short , the old " walk a mile in my shoes " adage would become a reality ! C'mon out and play , Tinman ! The Led Sled and I will provide you with plenty of Geritol , oxygen , and #5 machine oil so you can move around freely ! To answer your question , yeah , I would gladly enter a cash competition any day. Besides , Kevlar underwear these days is considered the height of fashion and at a cash competition ,you best believe I'd be wearing it ! The Old Man Edited July 26, 2009 by LoneWolf15

Modelmartin Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Casual interest is fine, Harry. There is an NNL in Crystal Lake next weekend(August 2). You can't complain about the distance!! The Milwaukee guys have a good NNL every April. I have been going to that one since it started many. many moons ago. The NNLs are non-competitive(mostly! ) and are tons of fun. Of course Toledo in October is the original and I go most years that I can. NNL East and West are bigger but I have been going to Toledo since 1980! Even Hutchings goes to Toledo!!!! The ego thing is funny. Some of the big ones claim that they are only in it for the fun because they can't compete . The very best builders are typically very down to Earth. As far as people getting mad at contest results I say who cares! I have done it, I have seen and heard others do it. We are all human. Sometimes there is some bad judging, sometimes there is bad attitude by the entrant. The thing is I just enjoy going AND I like competing, too.

That's true... Crystal Lake is just up the road a bit from me. I might actually mosey on up and see what's what... After all, it's a lot closer to me than the Volo Auto Museum, and I go there all the time. I even bought a car there a few years ago.
