ismaelg Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!! Looking for some decals for an aircraft model, I noticed one of the back boxes in the stash had something that looked like little "ants" TERMITES!!! and a lizzard's nest made their way into my aircraft stash, which is in a closet next to the cars stash. I had to take each box out and inspect everything. At least 2 models have been lost, and I'm not finished yet :x I also need to check the car's stash, but it should be OK because it has always been active. Check your stash every once in a while, especially those back boxes that have been there for years. Thanks,
PatRedmond Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 It's ready to SNOW up here, Ismael.....i'm not too worried about lizards .
Mr. Can Am Garage Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 It's ready to SNOW up here, Ismael.....i'm not to worried about lizards . Same here. Neither termites nor lizards seem to care for COLD Canadian winters.
Lownslow Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 you need to make a concrete cabinet izzy. when i was in pr i kept my models elevated and sealed with tape(our house had a roach problem)
lordairgtar Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 EEEWWW, Roaches...YUCH!! Good thing we don't have those problems.
KT EASTMAN Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 SPIDERS,SPIDERS,SPIDERS!!!!!! Thats all I have to fight!!! At least they do not eat the models!! I have just about every tool and spray known to man in my battle against these creatures!! So far I seem to be on top...but...who knows???KT
ismaelg Posted November 19, 2006 Author Posted November 19, 2006 The battle has been intense but I'm winning so far. At the end, 3 cars, 2 airplanes and 1 spacecraft were severly damaged. The cars were saved, and it seems 1 of the airplanes (a rare 1/100 Doyusha Concorde) will make it. The other airplane and the Saturn 5 rocket are not out of the woods yet.... Only good thing about this is that I found models I didn't even remember having and some of them made it to the workbench. So I'll be away from cars until about Christmas... Thanks,
Adam deCoste Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 what did they do to the models??? they the eat them
Joe Handley Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Anybody remember the article in SAE about Plastids?

Scott Colmer Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I feel your pain, Ismael. I found this mess sometime last year when I was digging for parts. The little monsters had eaten through the back of the cabinet and were working their way though my collection box to box. They LOVE decals and of course got to the Tamyia stuff first. Amazing how they also found the ONE kit - a Sauber Mercedes wit the circuit board pattern - that I bought just for the decal. This is what they they did. Oh I also had to have a little termite damage repaired when I sold that house. You may want to get an inspection. Good luck Scott Hosted on Fotki
sjordan2 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I have had the largest part of my stash in a temperature-controlled U-Store-It for a year and a half without checking it. Oh, well.
Aaronw Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 I don't worry too much about the kits stored in the house, but I keep all the models in the garage in stackable clear rubbermaid boxes which do a good job of keeping the critters and elements out. Since they are clear I can still see what is inside, making it much easier to find a kit when I want it.
AzTom Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Lizards??? Wow! I have a lot of them in the yard, along with Black Widow spiders. I'm keeping the Black Widow under control, You have to after them at night as they are nocturnal. I wasn't worried about the lizards, ... well until now, in-fact they help control the crickets. Will the lizards chew into master cartons? AzTom
Danno Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 (edited) Biggest problem I have with the Sonoran lizards around herr is that they tend to slop the glue onto the oil pan when they glue my engine halves together. Otherwise, they're fairly neat, don't chew big holes in the boxes, and don't damage my decal sheets when they grok my kits! Edited November 1, 2010 by Danno
Greg Cullinan Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I too use the large rubbermaid containers.I figure they are almost impenetrable. Home Depot has black ones with a yellow lid that holds about 30 kits. They run about $12 which I think is a good price. I do however have about 100 kits in my basement closet that I am in need of containers for.

We had a bear break into the garage last year, it made quite a mess, even tried to eat a can of varnish. The rubbermaid boxes got knocked around a bit, but they didn't pop open or break so the kits were just fine and still safe from the pesky squirrels. We eventually figured out what attracted the bear, the stupid squirrels were stashing acorns in the garage (but not in my kits ).
Greg Myers Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Another thing to look for,Tire melt.Got a bunch of sealed kits? What's going on in there?
62rebel Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 plastids! i didn't realize SAE were a circus' worth of clowns until i ALMOST fell for that one. why, so serious? roaches do love decal sheets. the main thing about going through MY stash is finding the multiple iterations of the SAME build going on... modeler's ADD, prime example.
