it is all up to your own preference

if you like builing imports i would say go with tamiya, fujimi or other companies that sound like they belong on the menu of a chinese restaurant

if you are looking for domestic you have a much broader (and generally cheaper) playing field

there is revell, AMT, model king and a few other

each of these have certain kits that are head and shoulders above the rest and each of them have certain kits that are down right junk

in my opinion none of them is clearly better then the other, it all jus depends on personal preference

having said that, my personal preference goes first to revell, second to AMT

if there is a specific kit you want to build and there are several companies who make that model just post a model specific question on here and im sure some of our members will be able to help you make a more informed choice

some people will agree with me on this one, if your into building older kits(ie, theyr'e old enough to be antiques) amt leaves something to be desired as far as quality goes. I've been building revell since i was a little kid and its always been top notch! the newer amt is alright though ;)

i understand what kind of dilemna you're in; especially with kits running near $20+ each now. this is where, if you see a model and you'd like to build it, but unwilling to pop $$ just to try it, asking about it here can get you lot's of insight. and while certain makers get blasted for old, less-detailed re-issues, it was a different game then. i'm pretty catholic on my building; i don't care who made the kit if it interests me. i grew up on metal axles and platform chassis, thinly disguised promo's in kit boxes and the smell of Testors' paint and glue.

again, if you see a kit and can't make out from the box how well it goes together (and some box art models have had serious professional attention!) get the kit brand and catalog number and SOMEBODY here can give you intel on it.

(from my experience, the only truly BAD kit maker was Palmer... but that's another story.)

Build whatever catches your fancy! Like a brilliant musician can make a cheap instrument sound beautiful... well you know where I'm going with this.

Personally, I hold no preference to any brand. All aggravate and drain my wallet equally!
