FujimiLover Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Hello there. I'm considering the possibilities of having a few 1/43 scale Lamborghini Murcielago Dnano bodies gold-plated. I've chated with ChromeTechUSA and he said he can do it for around $50 buck's including some chassis parts. I have a few questions regarding this. First, he said the gold-plated body would not be that durable for racing. Can you clear-coat over the gold and would that help protect it? What clear coat do you recommend most via rattle-can? Also, can I paint flat-black trim over it with good results? The car wouldn't look right if it was all gold with no details. Also, it would be less fun having it just sit on the shelf. Either way, I'm thinking about doing it just because it'll look hot! What do you guy's think? Can I clear-coat over gold-plated parts and will that help make it more durable? Same question for chromed parts.
FujimiLover Posted August 21, 2009 Author Posted August 21, 2009 Anybody have any thoughts to my question?
RJWood Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Marc, I use Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic #1301 on chrome plated parts like front grills before I black out the grill with a wash. it helps protect the surrounding areas before I wipe the excess black wash off the high points of the grill. It works great, and has no ill effects on the chrome. I would think the gold plating would be no different. Not sure about the durability of it, but it probably will give it some protection. hope this is some help.
FujimiLover Posted August 23, 2009 Author Posted August 23, 2009 Where would I find that paint and how durable is it? I need to make the clear coat as tough as possible. I'm not really trying to race with this body, but I would like it at least durable enough that I can drive it around the track a few times. and I don't want the gold plating to flake off either. I'm considering having the work done by ChromeTechUsa. Has anybody delt with this company before? They specialize in chrome-plating model car pieces, and die-cast models.
RJWood Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Krylon Paint can be found at Wal-mart, K-mart, Lowes, Home depot, True value hardware stores. I was thinking that Future floor polish might be a good choice as well. I'm still not sure how durable these will be, but its something you will have to determine by trying it out yourself, or if someone else can chime in on that. I have heard that ChrometechUSA does great work.
