Count Dragula Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) I did a sample spray paint job of laquer over enamel on the backside of a plastic model hood.I gave the enamel spray paint one week to dry before I sprayed it with one coat of laquer spray paint. It looks awesome to this point! The brighter enamel coat underneath lightened up the darker laquer coat. You can spray a laquer over an enamel, just not an enamel over a laquer, right? I'll try to post a picture of my hood sample soon.Any advice woud be greatly appreciated (it's a contest car). Thanks! Guest Gramps-xrds Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I'm not sure what you did but as a rule you don't spray lacquer over enamel. Sometimes if the enamel is acrylic you can get away with it if the lacquer is in one light coat. If it's sprayed in heavy coats the solvent will wrinkle the enamel. I have in the past used lacquer over urethane enamel on murals if you don't sand it. once the surface is broken it'll wrinkle like any enamel. If I were you I don't think I'd make a practice of doing it. But you can do whatever you want.
Chillyb1 Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Lacquer over enamel? Can't see a problem with that... if you are going for the crinkly, wrinkled look.

Can't see a problem with that... if you are going for the crinkly, wrinkled look. lol, I've done it, but you have to mist the lacquer, building up layers. IMHO it's not worth the effort. I've also sprayed Tamiya lacquer over Tamiya acrylic, on helmets and goalie masks, with the same results. The lacquer is too hot for it an "eats" away at the acrylic. Although on a helmet and goalie mask it's worth the effort, (I learned the hard way) the lacquer is so tough I've see work I did 10yrs ago on golie masks still look pretty good considering the element they are used in. Tamiya lacquer is super tough IMHO. Edited September 10, 2009 by Plastic Freak
Count Dragula Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Thanks for the replies so far, guys.I thought I had it wrong! And yes it was a light mist coat over the enamel. That's why I sampled it on the backside of a hood,I really didn't trust it.I've heard good stuff about Tamiya enamel paints.I am looking for an orange enamel paint now to go over the Testors Competition Orange spray paint that's on the plastic car body now.I wasn't too pleased with the testor's enamel spray paint. Can anyone tell me a decent darker orange enamel spray paint that would be compatible with the testors paint? The best build of the kit I'm doing was painted in a color made by Boyd's (Boyd's Orange Pearl Spray Paint ???? to be exact).I can't find that stuff anywhere locally.I don't have an airbrush.I'm trying to avoid the purple bath for this car body.If I have to strip it, I will though.I have about five weeks left in the contest I'm entered in.The rest of the build is progressing nicely,I just have this major hurdle to overcome. Thanks in advance for the advice!
MikeMc Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Good Enamel.....sorta like military intelligence.......certain words just don't go together!!!! If you want a Paint that POPS HOK Tangelo pearl is a great lacquer choice.Boyd's and Kustom Kolor both made an orange pearl. If you must do enamel then Testors Competition Orange is bright , but not a pearl. Jacquard does make pearl powders and I mix them in clear and apply over the color coats, and under the top clear. These show your colors...The panel is Testors(dried in 6 weeks) the camaro is Tangelo with extra yellow and gold pearl flake As far as the old paint on top of each other...The rule is Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic with the base as lacquer That said I've painted and cleared with lacquers over enamel and acrylics...yes there is a trick you can learn!! the yellow on this is Tamiya acrylic with Duplacolor lacquer ......not a wrinkle anywhere!
