My 68 Firebird In Progress

I've been putting some time into this one the last few days. Got most of the interior finished, just need to touch up the dash/ radio area and attach the steering wheel and column then glue it in place.

The engine compartment is mocked up. nothing is glued in place.

I finished the wheels today too and think they came out pretty sweet.

I should have the body in paint next week, going out of town for a few days. Thanks for looking! Comments always welcome.

Wow! Looking good Ryan. That interior is clean and I like the kit bashing of the steering wheel and valve covers. What kit are they from? I also like how shiny your inner fenderwells are.

I was surprised to see another 68 Firebird on here with mine. What color are you thinking of doing the body in? I really like those Testors Lacquers. Mine is the Rootbeer over bare plastic. It turned out very smooth.

Keep it up and let us see the posts. I'm hoping to get more photos up of mine tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments!

The body is going to be the same color as the fenders: Testors Colors by Boyd Grape Pearl, with silver custom racing stripes.

The valve covers came our of the parts bin, but I couldn't tell you what kit. I've long since tossed a lot of old kits (from when I stopped building years ago) but kept bags of misc. parts. The steering wheel thought, I think came from the Stone Woods and Cook gasser. I drilled out the holes in the spokes but it doesn't really show in the pix.

I saw yours too, its looking good also. I dig the rootbeer color. I'll have more pix next week.

I've got the rolling stock pretty much finished minus attaching some hoses and wires and some little touch ups here and there. Not sure when I'll have the time to get paint on the body, maybe this weekend we'll see. Thanks for looking! Comments still welcome.

Well, just a quick update. I got some paint on the old 'bird...finally.

Primered and then a coat of silver, which will be the color of the racing stripes.

Fresh out of the paint "booth".

And here she is showing her stripes!

More to do still to finish up, but I'm happy to have it painted.

Ryan-

Good to see you are back to work on this. It's been a while. Those stripes are looking NICE. Keep it up. What do you have left to do?

I'm doing a little pin striping around the edges of the big stripes, I've got to rub the paint out when it's dry enough (enamels...uugh) and then get some BMF around the trim and then mount the body and add the final little details and connect the hoses and wires. I'm anxious to get it done and its hard not to jump into it before the paint is cured.

Wow, been a while since I updated this one! So, I had some issues with the last paint job and the clear did not agree with the silver that I used for the stripes. Soooo...into the purple pond it went and I had to do it all over again. I decided I wanted the stripes to be darker, not as silvery as before,so this time I primed the body, then gave it a couple of thin coats of Testors Graphite lacquer, masked off the stripes, sealed with some clear, sprayed the purple, pulled the tape and sprayed a few final clear coats over all of it. Whew, lots of work but the results are well worth it. I'm more happy with it now that I have been yet. Here's a couple of pics and I think these will be the last on the bench. Once I can fully rub out the paint it'll be on to final assembly and then under glass.
