I used RTV silicone to make a duplicate engine block about 2 weeks ago. I looked at the mold and it has a light oily residue on it (sorta looks like melted butter) that wasn't there before.

What is it? Is it normal? How do I clean it off? Should I be frightened?

NEVERMIND! I Went to the Alumilite site and found this:

"The Quick Set RTV contains a slightly higher percentage of silicone oil (natural lubricant) than some other silicones and occasionally will sweat the oil out if it is even slightly over catalyzed.

If the molds sit for awhile and the next time you go to use them they are a little greasy, simply put some rubbing alcohol on your paper towel and this will help pick up the extra oil that has sweat out of the rubber from sitting around. Then baby powder, preheat your mold and cast as Carol mentioned and you should haved a perfectly good cast piece on your first part. "

Hey Charlz - yeah, the Quickset is finicky when it comes to the correct amount of activator. Sometimes it takes a few months to completely sweat out the excess(been there, done that). The HS-II won't do that if you add too much, but it will end up with air pockets from curing too fast. I'm an Alumilite distributor so if I can ever help feel free to contact me. Good luck with your casting.
