coopdad Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 (edited) Gang, I am working on a model that I need to mock it up but don't want to glue just yet. I have been using molding clay to hold the body panels together but it is just not strong enough. Is there a glue out there that is not permanent? John Edited November 2, 2009 by coopdad
curt raitz Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 this is what i use: It's a little more flexible but similar to white glue I thin it with water and flow it between the pieces I'm joining...sets up in about an hour after dis-assembly, it just peels off the plastic I also use it for attaching clear parts, tires(tyres, tars...), wheels, etc.
Modlbldr Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I've used plain ole white Elmer's glue before. It doesn't have a lot of strength, but was fine for the mock ups I was doing. Plus, it washes right off with warm water. I've also used some stuff that I call "Elephant Snot", which is similar to a tacky Silly Putty that they use for temporarily posting photos or such to a wall. I suppose, too, that rubber cement would work. Later-
Foxer Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 (edited) I use Microscale Micro Liquitape for mocking up. It's a white liquid you apply to both parts and makes a nice bond that can even be taken apart and put back together. It all washes off with water. A quote on the bottle says "A tacky adhesive for temporarily joining most modeling materials". This stuff is great and just what you asked for. Here's a link to it at the BMF site. It's at the bottom of the page. Edited November 2, 2009 by Foxer
randx0 Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 depending on the parts you are mocking up you could also try pinning it which involves small plastic rod and holes drilled slightly smaller so it is good and tight this is a useful technique for parts that need to be placed consistently several times with the added bonus of adding strength by gluing and then flush cutting when finished with test fitting .
Ryan Quantz Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Coopdad!!! Where have you been man?! I haven't seen you around anywhere in quite some time! Depending on what I'm using it for, I either use tiny dabs of CA glue for larger mockups like body parts and suspension, and other stuff I use something called "Tacky Glue" that you get at Michael's and comes in a brownish bottle with a white cap. It peels or rubs right off just like rubber cement. It works pretty good as long as you let it sit for a while. I also use that sticky putty that can hold posters and such to the wall. Each one of my methods has it's shortcomings, but 95% of the time they work. If not, good old masking tape does the trick.
coopdad Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Coopdad!!! Where have you been man?! I haven't seen you around anywhere in quite some time! Actually, I visit at least once every day, even on my phone now. But no, don't post much any more... the current build is really kicking my tooshy. I will probably start posting a few WIP pix in the next few weeks... but here is an idea: Back to the glue...I knew this should be the first place to post a question. I am guessing but there has to be at least 10 great ideas. And some (like CA and Tacky Glue) I actually have in the house. As always, can't thank you guys enough. John
MikeMc Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 any of the white water based glues will work, all dry slow,so clamp and set .....after setting some are stiffer than others, and wash all off with soap and water before paint!!
