I have finished the Mysterion....whew...what a complex kit for an out of the box build! I would have to say the most difficult part was tinting the canopy (part is clear, part is aquagreen). It seems that the Roth models always have a chassis that is a multipart affair. This was no different, but I am pleased with the completed car. Now I have one more bubble top of his left. Beatnik Bandit II. Then I have the Predicta and the Cherry Bomb......that covers the bubble tops that I am aware of.

Very nice! You forgot one tho, Bill Cushenberry's Silhouette. AMT did it. I have one, pm me if you are interested.

Thanks but I already built mine. Check out my Fotki site! :D

These are the bubble tops I have done: Silhouette and trailer, Beatnik Bandit, Road Agent, Mysterion

These are the bubble tops left to do: Beatnik Bandit II, Predicta, Cherry Bomb (technically not a bubble top, but a clear canopy nonetheless)

These are the others that I can't afford due to the scarcity of the kits: MPC Magnum GT II, Monogram Orange Hauler.

Know of any others??

Great job on a legendary car by a legendary artist. The Revellogram '58 Thunderbird reissue from '03 restored the bubble top and custom pieces back to the kit. I'm not sure if it replicated any specific custom, but it does have the bubble roof.

That is a beautiful build, as everyone has mentioned. Those can't be easy builds. I have the Beatnik Bandit, and you're right, that frame is a bear to deal with.

You've done a fantastic job.

again, Thanks! Why they couldn't make the frame a one or two piece affair is beyond my reasoning.

I am thinking of doing a tutorial on tinting the windscreens soon. I think that it is worth taking the time to do.

I wish I could see a pic of that kit!! Sounds right up my alley!

You have done the Mysterion justice! Looks great in all respects! Btw..how did you tint the top? Future and food coloring? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Yes Future and food coloring...but there is more to it.....!!!

Step 1: Clean the plastic with soap and water and dry well (to remove oily fingerprints, contaminants, etc)

Step 2: Dip the windshield into clear Future with no coloring and let dry for at least a few hours.

Step 3: Add food coloring to the Future to your desired color and depth.

** Food coloring will fade with time and light exposure, try RIT dye as well**

Step 4: Dip the windshield into the colored Future (best to submerge it completely!

Step 5: As the future gathers near the edges, slightly dab at the pools with a corner of a paper towel till it stops pooling. Set it on a paper towel to dry for a few hours.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you get the desired color depth.

Step 7: To clear away portions of the colored areas, I used Q-tips dipped in clear Future till I removed what i needed.

You might want to experiment with clear plastic spoons until you feel you have the hang of it before you try to tint the windshield. I have NOT tried this process with an airbrush! Good Luck!

very nice build of a very difficult and fussy kit!

but bubble tops...were they someones idea of a bad joke?

ever been to california? ever lock your dog in a car in the sunshine of cali (hint: DON'T!).

that dog will be fried within an hour. and thats just with normal coupe window greenhouse.

think how hot it gets under a bleedin BUBBLE TOP!

i never understood how the hyde-of-nauga, esp black, even stays intact for a week under a bubble top. must have to park them in the shade all the time? and if the top is plastic as i believe roths typically were, i would have to imagine they start to sag and distort with even a little sun.

bubble tops seemed to me a cool idea when i was 12. then i learned a bit about physics or more generally life in the real world. nothing would survive under a bubble top in cali in the sun for more than an hour...including the bubble top itself!

maybe thats what happened to ed after too many of these photo sessions?

anyway a great build, i love to see these old roth kits getting done by an adult who can do them justice. i know i never could as a kid

as an aside was it here that i read someone had found the orbitron in front of a tijuana brothel or something and was currently restoring it? ugly azz car but historical still. i think ed was sitting under bubble tops in the sun a bit too long while he was designing that one!

Thanks again for the compliments on the build! ;)

As far as the bubble tops go, I always thought it was about the look, not the practicality of the vehicle. I always thought bubble tops looked really "Far Out" in a cool way. Remember, they are show cars, not production vehicles. Too much glass in the south can bake anything! That's why the Ford Probe and the AMC Pacer went bye bye so fast and the advent of window tinting became so popular.

And...couldja imagine a bubble top in a hail storm?!??! Ohhh....the horror!!

The Orbitron was kinda fugly, Roth himself was never really happy with the way it turned out. Said he shoulda let the engine be seen instead of putting it under a bonnet. If you do a search, you can find the whole story behind the rediscovery of the car. The car was found in front of an adult book store in Mexico, and as you said it is being restored. Why is a good question!!
