Rob.Gwynne Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 My friend has been building high end model cars with incredible amounts of detail for years. Today he approached me and asked if i knew how to work the "interweb"(i'm pretty sure he meant internet haha) because he wants to sell some of his cars and doesn't understand all the online buying and selling. I know very little about model cars and whatnot but I like helping out friends and told him I'd poke around online for him and let him know what i found out. At first glance it doesn't seem like Ebay attracts the high end models that my friend sells and other places online were coming up useless as well. So i thought I'd open it up to the friendly community here at MCM. Where is the best place to buy and sell the high end stuff? "High end" might be the wrong word but here is a story he told me to give me some clarity on how nice his models were: He brought some of his cars to a show in San Jose and a Ferrari Photographer asked to take a picture of his car. A Pocher kit 1/8th Ferrari F40 with 14k gold detailing(I'm not sure if that is the right way to describe a model car). The photographer then photographed an actual F40 and presented it to his colleagues to see if they could tell which was a model and which as the actual car. They actually picked my friend's car as the actual car. Any advice or direction you could give me would be very much appreciated!! thanks, Rob Gwynne
jbwelda Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 (edited) that show your friends model was photographed at was probably the NNL West? ebay would be the place i think, but be prepared for the smack of reality. built models dont often bring much coin unless they are really spectacular, have a pedigree or provenance (like being in the july 66 issue of car modeler or something). this is probably somewhat less true in "collector scales" (like 1/43), but overall most built models, even vintage builds of vintage models, dont fetch much. thats not to say your friends models wont bring $. go to ebay and do a search for the keyword "built" in the auto models category and only include completed auctions so you can see what the models really sold for (because very often there are no bids until virtually the last moment and then everyone watching the auction throws down at once right at the end). Porky Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Hello, I agree that E-Bay would be the best place to sell the built kits but your friend will need to find a seller to consign the kits with that has alot of feedback ( over 2000 ) and all of it being 100% positive to insure that he gets top $$$$$ for his kits. Buyers that are shucking out the big bucks take that into account. I have friends that sell on E-Bay with low feedback but all good and I can list the same items as them and get 20 to 30% more out of the same items. Being a "Top Rated" "Power Seller" really helps. I think the bidders just feel they have a better chance at a smooth & seamless transaction. I do consignment sells if your friend is interested, you can check me out on e-bay under the user name "porkynpetunia" Hope this helps & Have A Great Evening !!!
crispy Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Pocher kits do very well on ebay. That shouldn't be a problem. That would be the best spot to really sell his stuff. Exposure is the key here. I'd love to recommend emodlecars.com, but it hasn't the audience ebay has. Chris
