Dragline Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 I meant total JUNK! It even says on the sheet 'Not compatible with setting solvents" HUH??? With the compound curves on some of them it's mandatory. They are positively junkola. What truly slays me is they have been in this business for a while [sic]. Even Polar Lights new better and had Slixx make theirs. And what a dream those are to work with. I was attempting to decal the Don Schumacher Super Shoe Vega and I just ended up taking them off. The billboard has to go around the deep fender flares and it simply can't be done without solution. I used some sparingly in the hopes I could get it to sit. yeah right..... The carrier film is far from adequete. Now I see why Slixx has them for sale. They know the Revell kit decals are useless. I decaled the Polar Lights Gene Snow Rambuctious and got those decals to sit into the fender reccess' with not one single ripple or crease. Of course, those were made by Slixx............. I wish someone would have written a brief thread on this, or perhaps a sticky about them. I'm a patient man usually [i build models fer Pete's sake], but these tested my patience to the limits. I should have known something was fishy when the kit box didn't even have a picture of the body on the chassis. Just chassis shots only. Even the box art guy couldn't make em work. I sure hope the new NHRA nostalgia kits have better decals in them than this. Disgusted. Bob F
Dragline Posted November 25, 2009 Author Posted November 25, 2009 I believe the kit is a 1995 reissue. Bob
935k3 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Believe it or not you cannot use solvents on Tamiya's newer(2000 and up) kit decals. What I do is keep some almost boiling water nearby. I dip a folded up tissue or cloth then blot out the excess water on a paper towel. Then I press the decal with the steaming hot cloth. It will conform instantly with no wrinkles. A Q-tip can be used for smaller areas. Some times I use a hair dryer on the lowest setting run quickly over the decal. I only use solvents down in panel lines. I could not have done this car without this technique. It is painted white as a base and all other colors are decals.
Modelmartin Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Bob F, Have you tried applying some Superfilm over the decals? I have done that and it works wonders. It turns skanky decals into good ones. You just brush it on and it flows out perfectly and dries quickly. It is compatible with setting solutions, too. I have saved quite a few old sheets using the stuff. I highly recommend it.
