Spoo76 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 I have an old Datsun 1/20 pickup that was unpainted and fully assembled. I got it apart but there are some chips and a a few glue marks that are difficult to sand. What can i use as filler to repair the area where a small corner has chipped off? should I just glue thin styrene to the back and fill with something? Ive read about using acetone to melt styrene and use as glue. Would this be the best idea? any tips for smoothing out the glue marks without sanding off body detail? Once the body is straight It seems I paint and primer much like a real car because I haven't been able to find another 1/20 datsun pickup Id like to get this nice and straight to make a mold for a resin copy I plan to make this a scale offroad RC trail truck so I am sure I will need another body at some point,However the first goal is getting this one in good shape Thanks for any help!
Spoo76 Posted February 8, 2010 Author Posted February 8, 2010 I should also say that I am 31 and haven't assembled or painted a model in about 16-20 years.
MikeMc Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 John a picture will help us...small chips can be filled with glazing putty..larger ones will need styrene scraps. I would not try the acetone melting you may make a bigger oops!!
Jason Vandergriff Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Pics? Ive used styrene to repair missing sections of body work. Ive also used it to add visual style. For the glue marks some careful sanding and body filler should take care of it.
JoeyB Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I use styrene, i think its a stronger fix.and if you have room you can drill holes and pin both pieces.I have been rebuilding a couple models latly, and thats my method.this is a pic of a paddy wagon i circled in red, sorry hard to see.but anywhere you see white its a fix. joe
Spoo76 Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 Sorry for all the pictures. The roof seems like some filler and primer would be enough. The hood already seems to be losing detail and the lines are getting thin and wavy for the center bulge the chips seem like it would be best to use a small piece of styrene and some sort of filler The A pillars seem to be pretty bad where the sun visor was (blech ) the rockers seem like it may be best to cut off and rebuild in styrene sheet for the bed I have found some evergreen that matches very very closely so i will cut out the bottom and do that Ive only used styrene a few times so everything is still new but I'm sure with time and help i can get most of this done My biggest concerns are the A pillar and hood
