jlucky Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I'm looking for help with a project. I'm building the Mongoose Hotwheels dragster and I've purchased some nice Competition Resin 60's slicks to replace the improper slicks included in the kit. My plan was to sand-off the raised Goodyear and replace with some Gofer Racing Tire transfers. Well I did the sanding and cleaning but the transfers just won't adhere to the slicks. My guess is that the transfers are simply too old or the tire is too rough. In anycase I've tried it three times and the best that happens is only part of the transfer sticks. DANG! Painting the label is now out of the question. Any suggestions about my best option?
caine440 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Both slixx and scale modeling by Chris have nice tire decals. Just put a little dull coat over them and I think they look darn good.
diymirage Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 ive heard of people getting good result by cutting out the decal and putting it in a bowl of water (nice and deep) and when the decal lets go of the backing paper you get the tire and put it underneath the decal and then light both og them out of the water as one
Old Buckaroo Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I see you live in BC. I have forgotten what they call across the border, here in the states it is called "Pledge With Future Shine". Basically clear lacquer for kitchen floors, brush some on where your decal needs to go and use it for adhesion. It will dry shiny so you will need to spray a dull coat over it also. I use this method for tiny little decals and also P/E emblems on painted surfaces.
caine440 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Good tip on the future. Works well with installing headlight lens also. On the tires I use a little micro sol decal solvent also.
RatRod Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I use Shabo rub on tire lettering, and I heat the transfer up under a light bulb before using, works great.
Bruno Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 I use Testors dull cote. I sand the raised lettering with 320, then 600, then spray a light coat of dull cote, let dry, put the decals on, let dry, then spray another light coat of dull cote, let dry, done.
catpack68 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) i used the same method bruno uses.i also weathered mine a bit with a tamyia weathering kit.you can get the same results with chalk or pastel colors.slixx has a vintage drag tire decal sheet.mine came from the parts box.i used the tires from the kit.here is a pic of mine i did last year. jlucky Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 Thanks for all the great suggestions. In the end I found some Goodyear decals in the scrap drawer and then got some Micro Flat and applied that looks not too bad.
