What staight axle for a 40 Ford Gasser?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I wantintg to build a 40 Ford coupe gasser with a raised front axle. What would be the correct axle people used in the late 50's & early 60's on this car? Are there any other kits that would have what I'm looking for in an straight axle or is there away to build one myself?

Thanks for any help.

James

for the most part you already should have the axle you need. depending on which kit you are using you should already have a straight axle included. Revell's street rod version has a dropped axle, but it's still a stock style straight axle. what you are looking for i'm guessing at this point is how to raise the front to get the gasser stance. you could space the spring down by filling the slot in the front crossmember as an easy approach.

other ways are to do some kit bashing or parts box hunting for a set of short parallel leaf springs like from say the '50 Ford pick-up kit and swap those in. those springs should provide some lift to the front by just using them alone. you can also make your own springs from styrene strip and arch them for as much lift as you desire.

switching to a true "straight" axle with no kick-up on the ends will also get you some increase in ride height. an easy source of an axle like that is in the Revell/Monogram '55 Chevy street machine kit, but that kit is 1/24 scale and it's width will more than likely be a problem.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was on Byron's Gasser Madness & went to Vistors Rides & selected Ford. On the bottom of the page next to the last picture is a 40 Ford gasser, that is the type of straight axle stance I'm looking for. If someone could post that picture on here, I'm not up to par on my computer skills. Thanks, James

I think that the Wild Willie Borsch kit had a round, straight axle with a transverse(buggy)spring. A lot of funnycar kits had round, straight axles also. Atleast if I'm wrong someone will corect me and you'll get your info...

have fun,Smokey/yekoms
