I'm a total resin newbie, but I'd like to try my hand at it very shortly. My question is this ... can I make a mold of a model car part (say any engine part, block, heads, etc) that has been previously painted or that is in primer? I'm looking to improve and cast some turbo's and engine components and these items will need to be in primer after I modify them. Wasn't sure if the primer/paint would come off or stick to the mold. I've got a vintage Ford 427 SOHC thats been quietly waiting to be cast in resin for over 20 years. I'm looking at doing that also! Appreciate any and all help. Thanks fellas!

The primer wont hurt anything, just remember the parts will come out with the same texture as the master part, if you want the parts to have a slicker finish you can throw on a coat of paint and buff / polish the part. Remember to wipe off the part with alcohol or something of the like after you get it clayed up, before pouring your rubber to make sure your part dont have your finger print on the outside of the cast part. :(

I think Perry's Resin dose a nice 427 SOHC, I was thinking do doing it also at some point as I use a few of them.

always remember, a coat of paint will bury some detail. its best to cast bare plastic if possible.having said that, about 95% of my masters have primer on em. mostly due to all the body work thats been done to em.
