Railfreak78 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Harry I agree with the Checker. I saw one at Goodguys that was not a cab. It was a dark blue and looked sharp. Don't forget that the Chevy Suburban is an SUV and actually started with the late 40's early 50's style. Not sure I've seen a Willy's but would like to
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 So that means Kevin is wrong on all three! D'OH! lol
Modelmartin Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) How about a Checker Marathon? Kind of an iconic car if you ask me... So now it's iconic, huh? Sure, Harry. Change the rules in the middle of the game!! I take offense to that since I am an iconoclast. Seriously? A Checker? I hesitate to suggest another vehicle as boring and insignificant to automotive development because there will be some fan of that particular vehicle who will take offense. Besides that, I can't think of too many other cars as boring! For a design milestone for many reasons I nominate the Citroen 2CV. They were great for racing, too!! Yeah, if you mean one of the ugliest designs ever! Ok, I'll take back my Checker nomination, and instead I'll go with the 1901 Curved Dash Olds (first car built in large numbers).
randx0 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 some cars that come to mind in no particular order or importance would be daytona/superbird,64 gto, chrysler minivans ,thomas flyer from 1908 race, any "hot rod or soup job",tucker torpedo,66 bronco, lambo countach, mercedes gull wing, jaguar xke, bentley blower, auburn boattail, and amc pacer
B_rad88 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 ok, well..... i would have to say: Lancia, they made 7 great cars over time, and every single one had its problems(like every italian car, lol) but, they are beautiful. the lancia stratos: the lancia stratos problems, lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoUiJuOhbk0 i had to pick out the stratos, 1. its beautiful, 2. it sounds awsome, 3. its problems, 4. watch the videos, and you'll understand all 3, lol. i can go one, and trust me there are porsches, a couple of ferraris, few lamborghinis, the mclaren f1, and yes the bugatti veyron 16.4! the car the broke all the records(well alot), 10 radiators, 4 turbos bolted on a W-16 engine, yes a W-shaped engine, 1001hp, top speed of 254mph the fastest production car to date(not including one-offs), and those speeds of 250+ the engine breaths in as much air in one mintue as was do in one day! and it was firsts for alot of stuff, incredible machine! and others, alot of others, lol.
Modelmartin Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 A design milestone? Yeah, if you mean one of the ugliest designs ever! Ok, I'll take back my Checker nomination, and instead I'll go with the 1901 Curved Dash Olds (first car built in large numbers). The Curved Dash Olds is a good one. It was the first volume built car. Engines by Leland who ended up rebuilding the ashes of Henry Ford's first company into Cadillac and then started Lincoln. The Miura nomination is a great one. It is the most stunning supercar of them all.
Flymeister Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) Mmmmmmmm...... looks like this debate can go on forever..lol.. here's what I thought - Set a deadline for submissions, then maybe post each and every car in this topic, and we can vote??! (not sure of the logistics as I've never done a poll before) What u guys think? Edited March 19, 2010 by Flymeister
Harry P. Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I like it, sounds like a fun (and interesting) poll.
Harry P. Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 The Curved Dash Olds is a good one. It was the first volume built car. Maybe I should have said the first car built in mass quantities. The Coneheads would have loved it!
B_rad88 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 i would also have to say the classic mini. with its timeless styling, small body, peppy motor, it was a fun car to drive! and lasting 50 years is pretty dang good!
Modelmartin Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Maybe I should have said the first car built in mass quantities. The Coneheads would have loved it! But it wasn't from "FRANCE "!! i would also have to say the classic mini. with its timeless styling, small body, peppy motor, it was a fun car to drive! and lasting 50 years is pretty dang good! I second the motion heartily.
Nick Winter Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) I knew about the vehicle. What I meant was that it has no possible significance in automotive history. You are welcome to like it. It is amusing. But it is ugly and is a mere footnote. Well thank you for shooting down something I think to be a key moment. How about the Chevy W/T '90-'96 I beleive it was a low priced budget truck aimed at small buisness owners. Edited March 19, 2010 by Dukefan69'
Frank Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 1959 Cadillac: the car with the biggest tailfins 1958 Plymouth Fury/Belvedere: first cars with torsion bar and aire ride suspention 1964 El Camino: First car/truck combo vehicle The 1934 Ford coupe utility "Ute" made in Australia was a few years earlier.
Harry P. Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 The 1934 Ford coupe utility "Ute" made in Australia was a few years earlier. Yeah, but the steering wheel was on the wrong side!
Modelmartin Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Well thank you for shooting down something I think to be a key moment. How about the Chevy W/T '90-'96 I beleive it was a low priced budget truck aimed at small buisness owners. Sorry, Nick. I didn't want to rain too hard on your parade. The trucks you mention just don't have much significance in the development of the automobile which was the idea behind this thread. You are very welcome to like them, there's nothing wrong with them. I am sure they are fine vehicles but they aren't very groundbreaking. The only recent North American cars that to me represent advances in development might be the 1st Ford Taurus in the 80s and the C3 onwards Corvette. I don't want to own either one and the Taurus isn't very collectible but they were significant advances in technology and manufacturing in their time. I am sure there are others. I sure hope nobody nominates the Chevette! Someone already mentioned the Pacer.
Harry P. Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I sure hope nobody nominates the Chevette! Someone already mentioned the Pacer. What, no Yugo???
Harry P. Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 How about the Toyota 2000GT? The first Japanese car that could be seen as a "serious" sports coupe, not an econobox.
Harry P. Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Amphicar??? Or was that just a weird footnote in automotive history?
Harry P. Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Chrysler Turbine Car. Again, significant milestone or weird footnote?
Harry P. Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 1961 Jaguar E-Type (XKE here in the states). Styling masterpiece, mechanically not so hot...
