Ford Edsel Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 i have been reading some post and you guys do know your stuff. well i use to build some model cars years ago, and use to even mess w/ hot wheels. i just never got into it high enough to move up on scales. i got a revell uh-1c huey (sweet looking) today from hobby town usa (sense i can't find models any other place). a co-worker gave me some tips and also told me to get the paint at walmart and spray paint primer. well here comes the questions (hope i make sense lol)... my friend said get the spray can white primer... does the brand matter? does the one for metal work? i was unable to find any paint at the walmart i checked or target, but i will check super walmart tomorrow... does it matter the brand on the paint? can it be craft paint used for ceramic and craft items? i live in tampa,fl and don't seem to have luck any where i go lol. would michaels be a good place to get the paint? do they sell model cars? i also see people talking about air brush painting. is that what i need, or can i use a brush till i get better? also what type of gel glue do i need? i'm like so lost here lol... i like collecting diecast cars and rather have some that i build. also do people here mess w/ hot wheels? its been years sense i messed w/ any of this. thanks in advance for teh help, and sorry for all the bs i said plus all the questions.
randx0 Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 If you are looking to paint model cars, spray cans are the way to go for starters. I would recommend testors lacquers or tamiya spray paint hobbytown should have those .as far as primers go ,duplicolor or plasticote are good ones.another place to find a good selection of spray paint would be auto parts stores .your post mentions a huey which I would imagine you would want to paint in flat olive drab or something similar which you could use enamel paints .perhaps a sporting goods store with a hunting section may have those colors. yes michaels does sell model cars and you can sign up online to get coupons for upto 40% off which is a good way to stock up .as far as glue I would recommend liquid cement from ambroid, tamiya or plastruct, applied sparingly with a brush. I have seen a few customized hot wheels cars around here but mostly 1/25th scale cars and trucks .good luck have fun and welcome aboard.
Agent G Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Michaels sells models and Valspar brand spray paint. Look for their "Sandable Primer". It is the same as Plastikote T235 auto primer just labelled differently. It is a lt gray color that goes on thin, dries fast, and can be sanded smooth for a killer finish when doing glossy paint. Also, they have a selection of hobby spray cans as well as many colors of craft sprays. An airbrush is a good thing if you stick with the hobby. DON'T purchase a "starter kit" I feel it's a waste of money. You will progress faster than the brush and propellant cans are expensive. Check out a site called "Harbor Freight" Their airbrushes are clones of major brands and dirt cheap. Good for starters. Do some research and order accordingly. You will want a compressor, with a pressure regulator. Be careful with camo colors from sporting goods departments. That paint has a high solid content and goes on real thick, and in my experience, grainy. It's made for john boats, tree stands and the occasional pickup truck. Any gel super glue will work. Think small and cheap, as it will go bad before you use it all. Get a bottle of thick gel and a bottle of thin. The thick gives you a few seconds to work with the thin sets almost immediately. I like Ambroid "Pro Weld" for a general all around model glue. It dries fast and creates a good bond. Tamiya "Extra Thin" is good as it allows some time to work with. Testors "Pink Label" (I think) is very slow setting. These are brush on liquid glues for plastics. Tube glue has it's purpose, but for the life of me I don't know what. G
