glenn Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 (edited) Hi guys, First off this is a great site,I have only built two models before one was a complete glue bomb which I will fix one day and the other came out quite good so now i'm attempting my 3rd build. This site has inspired me to have a go at a custom chassis build.I found this kit from Hasegawa and is a car I used to own and race back in New Zealand... It's not a very well built kit but I'll do my best to clean up the body, here is a few pics of the mock up and the look i'll be going for... Here is the progress so far,I have started on the basic frame,im going to just wing it as I go along.Im sure ill make mistakes as I go along so feel free to offer any advice,im using this build as a learning curve and will redo it once my skills are were I want them to be,the body I will just spray matt black until I can teach myself how to airbrush. Then I'll paint it gloss black with true fire flames Thanks for looking. shucky Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Glenn welcome, it looks like your off to a nice start. I've always wanted to build an AWD drag car. If I could offer a little advice..I'd say to pick up some styrene rod like Evergreen in various sizes to continue working that chassis. It would be easier to work with than full metal, if you have access to it. Keep up the good work + good luck on the build!
glenn Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 Thanks,I do have access to styrene but im not a big fan of the plastic look, eventually I want to be able to scratch build everything from metal and only have plastic bodys. For now im just using the first few builds as practise,it's getting pretty fiddly now that im adding more bars to the chassis so im pretty impressed with the skills of you guys who build from brass tube/rod.
glenn Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 Yeh I have that build bookmarked, that's an insane amount of detail gone into his build, can only wish to get that good one day.
glenn Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 Here is some more progress on the chassis, have also tried to fabricate a trans tunnel out of aluminium sheet but I can't get it smooth enough so will leave that for now.I will cut the centre section of the chassis out to be able to run the driveline down the centre of the car, once I buy a dremel tool I will do that along with cleaning up all the soldered joints.
glenn Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 Havn't done much lately on this,I decided to redo the chassis I was working on is it got quite lopsided but was good practise, here is the original.. And here is what I have done so far with the new one,it's still not perfect but im happy to continue with it for now as I will eventualy rebuild this again one day,im getting a bit stuck with the planning as im not quite sure when to start adding interior detailing and firewall etc,it won't be nice to get to the point where I have built too much and can't fit stuff in cause I have left it too late-all part of the fun I guess. I have also put about 4hrs worth of body work in to this body as it had numerous faults compared to the 1:1 version, theres still abit to go but I had a setback when I tried to open up the front bumper area for the intercooler,I used my dremel with a cutoff wheel and the wheel exploded taking a big chunk out of the bumper,I tried to smooth it out and equal it up but it's gotten too big and looks wrong, any ideas on how I can fix this up,I want to have the opening flush with where the spotlights finish
glenn Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 Here's the inspiration for the build, this is what I want to replicate when I rebuild this at a later date when i'm good enough too,it won't be an exact replica as there's a few things I don't quite like There's going to be a fair amount of work scratch building an engine to this detail but it's a good goal to aim for one day.
