drball Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 I saw today that this 1/12 kit is being reissued with PE and Cartogragh decals like they did recently with the Porsche 910. Preorders are being taken on several Asian sites.
T70MkIII Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I can't find anything on Tamiya's website - do you have a link to anything that looks reliable?
vontrips Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Looks nice with the canards. The reissue looks really nice, but those new to this kit should bare in mind a couple of points. 1. The prototype on the box cover was powered by an Aston Martin V8 2. It was a very dark green British Racing Green. Why Tamiya didn't rectify this is beyond me! There are some nice alternative decals available for the Chevy versions though. I really want to do the Sid Taylor car one of these days.

Now that is strange...just found this and the car is now blue! http://www.lolacars.com/newsstory.asp?NewsId=8 I've got some old photos were the car definitely looks green and other racing forum members have previously agreed with this. IIRC, it also had red pinstrips!

IIRC, it also had red pinstrips! http://www.imca-slotracing.com/Lola%20T70%20Mk3B.htm shows SL73/101 as blue with Team Surtees decals at Le Mans in 1967, and says it was later painted BRG by Max Wilson (my Starkey books are in storage, so I can't confirm from that source). The car in the lolacars link is SL73/121 which was also a 1967 Team Surtees car. This one changed from Aston to Chevy during '67 before going to Jackie Epstein in '68. She painted it deep purple after a crash that year... I guess both Team Surtees cars would have been blue at some stage while they had the Aston engine for SL73/121 to have been restored to that colour. I actually like the blue better than BRG, and will paint my (merely contemplated at this stage) quarter scale version in blue.

Yep, must admit I've never been a fan of BRG on any car myself, which is why I thought the Sid Taylor scheme looked good. Another issue I have with the kit are the wheels, as the rims are too deep for most versions. The Taylor car is the only one I've have seen in period pictures of with the deeper rimmed versions - oh, and the kit tyres aren't Goodyear, of course...grrr! Had a quick look at the Bamsey book, there's a pic on the cover and a few colour shots showing the car in green. Two prototype shots are at the ring in '67, can't find mention of chassis numbers though. It's always diffcult to judge colours from these old pics, but the green grass in the background looks correct so the colour balance is probably OK? Will try and scan them later. Oh yes, and there is definitely a red 1/2" pinstrip on the edges of the white arrow - probably red insulation tape! )
T70MkIII Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Do you mean the white Sid Taylor car with the green stripes? A clean look which I quite like. I hadn't thought much about those colours, but, having been driven by Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme there is a strong Australian connection with that car (although Denny was born in NZ - we always claim their famous as our own). I hadn't paid much attention to the wheels before - I always liked the aggressive deep look of the Tamiya wheels, but hadn't compared with the real cars. I totally agree with your grrr! re the tyres, of course. I'd forgotten I had Bamsey tucked away in a box somewhere too - time to start digging out some research material... I wonder how much has changed with the reissued kit, other than the canards and some photo-etched parts?

Knowing Tamiya, nothing else will have changed (apart from maybe the decals being made by Cartograph?) which will be a huge improvement. Yeah, the Sid Taylor scheme looks very fresh...my main problem is I want to do a snorkel Lotus 47 too, which was in the same colours and both of them raced in the BOAC 500 at Brands! Go on fill yer boots with the decals - I've got a set and they're very nicely done: http://www.f1specialties.com/main/conversions/l70.php I'm sure he used to do the Goodyear decals too but can't find them there! T70MkIII Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Are these the ones you mean? http://www.f1specialties.com/main/conversions/rt16-12.php
