cowboysevens Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 hi blake welcome to the forum, try eric "porky" at p&p vintage. his web site is a lil behind schedule so send him a email , i think he might have the mold for what your looking for. good luck http://www.ppvintagekits.com/ dennis
clayton Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I been working on one my self the last year so. it's been work on it fore a a day or so then box it back up the next 6 month's. As for the hood you may have to make it your self. Silver State sold the molds too a guy around NJ then sold them too(RNK)resin then sold again.after a year of tracking I did find the molds, new owner tells (now they are old and dry rot and really not any good). I do have one of Bobby's hood it has been a pain too work with.I too may end up making one. I did find some info on how too back date the 359 amt into a 531. have too look for it. it don't seem all that hard just a lot of time to do it. clayton

Clayton Got a Email from Eric of P&P nope he don't have and would like to cast one if some one could make the master's. I think too do this one would need the older AMT kit with the little window cab and rework the hood and around the air intake.

Ben Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) Silver State produced earlier model Peterbilts such as the 1952-54 350 model. I am pretty sure they never produced a 351. Dave Natale of AITM (American Industrial Truck Models) now has the molds and plans on reissuing them some day. Tim Ahlborn mastered a 351 tilt hood and it was cast by Bobby Griffen. I'm not sure if Eric has the molds for it or not? Clint Freeman produced a 351 butterfly style hood conversion kit but that's long out of production and i'm pretty sure nobody has ever reproduced it yet? Edited August 31, 2010 by Ben
mackinac359 Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Spaulding's had a 351 a handful of years ago. The 358 hood from P&P and a 351 may look similar, but a 351 and 358 are quite different. The 358 is wider than a 351 - the 351 grille IS the radiator. The 358 grille/surround tilts around/over the radiator. The 358 has the row of fluted ribs on the top of the hood. You would need to narrow the 358 hood at the radiator and the widen the inner fender skirts. To be accurate you would mount the fenders to scratchbuilt mounts on the frame. 358 351 If you study the radiator and surrounds, you can see how the 351 rad "nestles" in between the frame rails and 358's crown/surround surrounds the radiator. You can also see that 351 had the headlamps mounted just behind the side of the radiator and 358 has the lamps mounted to the surround. With all this said.. a 358 is a tilt hood 351. Tim

cowboysevens Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 No I sure don't,I may have too eyeball it. well i think from what tim said you should be able to convrt the 358 hood into a 351 purdy easely, or atleast easier than any other hood, lol. dennis

Tim 351 grille IS the radiator,Hummm I kinda had that idea. any idea on how too do that(make a radiator into a grill). I got a Silver State maybe I could copy from him. when I was little we had a truck that had shutter's and I would get fusses at for playing with them all the time.
airlessride Posted September 1, 2010 Author Posted September 1, 2010 Hmm thanks for all these great replys and info guys. I may just buy that 358 resin and go from there. Also (Clayton) if you wanna sell that silver state on let me know i'll buy it. Thanks a Bunch ~Blake
clayton Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 if it has too go one I'll let you know.Been keeping a eye out on eBay those kits are selling way over $100.00 now. Think I payed around $70.00. Clayton
Old Albion Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 Spalding also offered an extended hood 351 (127" BBC I think). I have one and bought 3 x 119" BBC hood conversions about 5 years ago. The 119" BBC was great because they gave you 2 radiators in the kit. You could either have the shutter type or the one with the single rib and mesh screen. When I built my 351 I used only the shutter type radiator and possibly the fenders (I cant remember have to check). The hood itself I made of brass sheet and fully opens. Dave
