Greg Cullinan Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Working on a Gasser with no experience, google has provided some nice pictures but little reference to the undercarriage. If you have any gasser builds could you post pictures so I can steal ideas? ;) I mean for reference!
Brett Barrow Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) Working on a Gasser with no experience, google has provided some nice pictures but little reference to the undercarriage. If you have any gasser builds could you post pictures so I can steal ideas? ;) I mean for reference! For Gassers, there's no better place I know of than the H.A.M.B. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ Sign up there and search the boards, you'll find all you ever wanted to know about gassers! I have some really good threads bookmarked on my home computer, I'll post when I get home tonight. What kind of Gasser are you building? Tri-Five Chevy? Willys? Something less typical? I'm building a '57 Chevy 210 Gasser right now, but I haven't taken any chassis shots yet. It's just getting started anyway. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=35527&st=0&p=363168&#entry363168 Edited October 2, 2010 by Brett Barrow
Greg Cullinan Posted October 2, 2010 Author Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) Model Kings 63 Tempest, seems a bit out of the ordinary as most Gassers I've seen are 50's era. Thanks for the link, keep hearing about HAMB and never looked into it. Edited October 2, 2010 by Greg Cullinan

Here's a good picture thread of AWB's http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=393460&highlight=awb+tempest *They don't have to have straight axles, some didn't. If I build a model of one, it will, though!
Raul_Perez Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Here's a few chassis picks from the '43 Willy Gasser pickup I built a couple of years ago. Here's the link to the rest of the build pics. Here's the '55 Nomad gasser from a resin kit. Here's the link to the rest of the pics. Later,
Modelmartin Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Guys! Guys! Guys! NHRA gas class cars have to comply with a few rules first to be a "gasser". Stock wheelbase. Engine setback of 10% maximum measured from the axle centerline to 1st spark plug. Chopped tops were allowed but no streamlining which meant you couldn't lay the windshield back. Gassers came with blowers, injected or carbs. Classes always ended with " __/G or in later years__/GS. The prefix depended on displacement and whether it was supercharged or not. A/FX and altered wheelbase cars are not gassers. They are cool cars but they simply aren't gassers. Some of the gasser websites spell all of this out in greater detail. I feel better now. Keep on posting cool models.

Keep on posting cool models. Absolutely right! One of my pet peeves is calling any car with a raised front end a gasser. All gassers back in the day had to be able to be run on the street. This meant that they had to have a cooling system including a radiator in the darn thing. And the radiator had to have as large a frontal area as the original radiator for the car. So many guys build what they call "gassers" with no radiator...which would then make it an Altered. Also, gassers could not have these highly raised front ends. The body and chassis could not be raised and the body had to remain level at a standstill when equipped with competition type tires. Here's the pages out of the 1970 NHRA Rulebook covering gassers... Hope this helps guys who are trying to build a period correct gasser. Some specifics and weight breaks for Supercharged gassers is covered on the lower left of page 28 and the top right of page 29. Otherwise, supercharged gassers had to follow all the gas class rules as the non-supercharged cars.. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

Brett Barrow Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Somebody posted a question about the changes in Gasser classes pre-1970, now it appears they've deleted the post. Here's the link I was trying to post in response to their question - http://gassermadness.com/Gas_Classes/index.htm
Greg Cullinan Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 I knew I saw pictures from you last night, guess they were in that post. They were some cool builds though. I knew gasssers and awb were differently built cars but thought it was the same platform.(shoes what I know) i deleted my posts and the question regarding rules pre-'70. thank you Brett for the link Dave

The entire book was posted on the Quartermilers forum by a guy who goes by the name of "curb" back in 2008!
