Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 What's goin' on... Here's another project. http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex...2500663&f=0 This is the old AMT/ERTL Fruehauf dump trailer. I built this to ressemble it having a steel chassis and an aluminum tub. This has a scratch built working tarp assembly (based on a Mountain Tarp Assembly). The tarp itself is HO scale fence material. The side boards are thin strips of balsa I stained w/ one of those Minwax (Light Oak) stain touch up pens. At the rear I added a tail gate lock bar. Underneath the latch lock assembly was scratch built including the air chamber and linkage. On the gate and side the hooks from the AMT 359 wrecker were installed and some chain were used to make "chain locks" I didn't want to use the older Dayton/WEBB style (spoke) hubs so I cut off the Pro-Par style hubs and used some AMT 10 hole rims in place. This gives the trailer a whole different look! Thanks for looking! Scott
Old Albion Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Scott, This looks great. The little details on the tail gate and the tarpaulin are excellent. The truck and trailer look like they belong to each other. Good colour scheme. Great build.
SpreadAxle Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I've never seen a tarp that looked like this one. I'm so used to the black tarps. Cool idea
Old Albion Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 This type of mesh tarpauline is becoming very common here in the UK. they are lighter than the sheet type and if the wind gets under them they don't start flapping like a big sail. They are used extensively on skips, garbage, bricks all these types of thing. the only time that the old sheet is used is when the load has to be contained and it has to be dry. More and more truck and trailer bodies are being fitted with these automatic tarps. This removes the need for the driver to climb all over the place to fit the tarp and reduces the possibility of an accident. The last thing you want here in the UK is your driver having an accident. Scotts done a superb job, looks very realistic. Makes the pretty standard tri axle dump trailer that bit more interesting. We have commented before there aren't too many trailer kits to choose from so any variation is most welcome. This gives me ideas for the future  Ray, Keep the comments comming!! Your enthusiasm for your Proffession is good to see.
SpreadAxle Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Interesting concept. I know about the flapping tarp. i had the wind get under a tarp and pulled me off the trailer once. I wasn't hurt, but I should've gotten down sooner.
