GTMust Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Hey Ron.... is that Alcad on the frame and axles, or have you found a chrome paint I'm not aware of? Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 21, 2011 Author Posted May 21, 2011 Hey Tony, how are ya... Thats actually a RUST-OLEUM Metallic Finish (chrome cap, rattle can). Its not the easiest thing to work with. I had to respray it once cause I made the mistake in trying to handle it in the time I usually would with a normal spray can paint. What ended up happening was finger prints, even though it was dry to the touch. Needs a minimum of 3 or 4 days before you can try to handle it. It drys on the outside ALOT faster then it cures and actually adheres and sucks to whatever you spray it on, if that makes sense. I havent tried alclad yet, but I plan on it. Most of the finishes I see people get with it and use it for on this forum are really nice. Ron
GTMust Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Thanks for the info Ron. That's definitely the closest can spray paint I've seen to look like chrome. I'll definitely look out for it and give it a try. And thanks for the warning! Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Not a problem, anytime Tony. Ron
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 26, 2011 Author Posted May 26, 2011 Managed to get a little done today. Worked the headers on the other side of the engine, just letting the glue dry on the tips before I take them off and get some primer and all on them. I did get some primer on one set though and will get the others tonight. I also chopped the window frame, which is one solid piece connected to the instrument panel/cluster, so im not sure how im gonna paint it yet colors and what not, but i'll figure that out later. Till then I wanted to post a couple of pics to keep me going. Now I gotta go clean my car and buff out the scratches. Birds took a BIG dump on my car yesterday and must of used it as a perch cause its scratched up big time. Here is the funny part... I actually washed it yesterday and wouldnt you know it, I went out today and they had took a dump in the same exact spots and added even more scratches.... I swear it was like twilight zone or something when I saw it. I had to check the date on my phone to make sure I wasnt stuck in something like that movie Groundhog day or something.... Thanks for taking a look Oh... got some work on my 32 pickup done today. I'm excited about that too. Just havent taken any pics of it yet. Hopefully i'll have it finished tonight. We'll see how much energy I have after working on my 1:1 car LOL
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 Pics of the header with a bit of paint on them and positioned on the engine. And pics of the 32 pickup progress. Even though time was limited, what time I did have, was a real good time with modeling today. Cant wait for tomorrow when i may finish both models. And I cant wait to start another one, and use my new found skills, tools, and definitely the new found knowledge from you guys helping me out. First up T Bucket. I definately want to build another one of these someday but in a larger 1:25 scale.
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 And the pickup... Thanks and as always comments and constructive wordings are welcome.
John Teresi Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Ron.......your pipes are AWESOME......great scratch building............can`t wait to see this build finished.
GTMust Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Hi Ron, From another 1/32 scale builder...... I assume that '32 Chevy Pickup is the Pyro/Lindberg kit? Nice clean build and great paint. Two great additions to your display shelf when they're finished. Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 John thanks alot I appreciate it I still have a long ways to go before I can pull off what you've been working on Tony likewise Thank you I appreciate it All I need now is an actual display shelf or some sort of "display case" with shelves in it. No pics today, just did some touch up painting, mainly to the engine she was a bit worn from how much I handled it working on the headers. And finally felt comfortable glueing up the body to the interior and all. Plan to get the body glued to the chassis, along with the motor, tomorrow/today. And if im still happy with the radiator i;ll get that glued to. Other then that just gotta get my windshield glued and I think she'll be done. Thanks again!!
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Well, Woohoo I have a bit done. The truck is finished - minus winshield glass and headlight covers cause they mysteriously dissapeared even though I used something to hold all the parts in while this one was on hold And the T-Bucket is coming along. Thinking of making some interior changes now. Biggest change might be the interior color. I think im gonna make it white now. I had stripped the window bracket and instrument cluster cause I didnt like the way my idea for painting it turned out, and when I did I broke one of the window brackets. So I had to do some doctoring (small piece). So after I did that I decided to paint it white instead of looking at it in grey primer, and when I did I got the idea for all white So these are the pics before I start the "more then likely" interior changes. Thanks for looking First up T-Bucket... Once again sorry for the poor picture quality. Working on finding the right driver for my camera. CD for uploading them is lost.
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Next up the truck. Thanks for looking.
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 K changed my mind. Not changing interior to white. Still have a few details to paint but im real close, atleast I think I am, nothings been going right on this one lately, getting a little frustrated with it. Broke the window frame again too lol...
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Dont you love it when you put in all your efforts and on the last step/coat a little tiny bug lands on your part
GTMust Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Dont you love it when you put in all your efforts and on the last step/coat a little tiny bug lands on your part Yep...... just hate it... and it happens to us all! Just happened to me on my Lozier build. Oh well!!! Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Oh no, you just started that one too. Sorry to hear it. Hopefully it fix's easily.
GTMust Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 No problem..... just in the first primer coat... can easily be sanded out. Hopefully you can too Ron! I know how you feel though. Tony
John Teresi Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Ron......just a tiny setback........still looking good man......luv those old bucket`s.
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 Thanks Tony and John I really appreciate it . It Sanded out, when I resprayed it something else happened LOL... so I had the first one I made sitting there and decided i'd go with that one. And when I did the paint didnt sit or look right for some reason. So I ended having a little experiment to see how a clear coat would look over it and when I did it had a reaction and actually lost that chrome look. Looked like a steel or aluminum color after that. And so I sat there for a minute and said you know what, maybe this tank isnt supposed to be chrome, it certainly doesnt wunna be. Then I put on another coat of clear, let it dry, and then decided to paint the sides of it a different color. And made a "gas filler" (forget technical term for it). So for todays events I have to make a quick steering column, wont be nothing fancy. And after that i'll be installing steering wheel, shifer, radiator and pondering the idea of trying to lower the roof/convertable top to sit lower then original due to chopping the winshield in half. If I dont do that it should be under glass rather soon. I'll probably post the couple previous builds as well when I do. Also been working on a build of the 67 chevelle that got a ruined body thanks to my frustration with paint not turning out to well on the body and got a little crazy with my dremel. I was planning on sitting it aside for a long time, but my future step daughter got a sudden interest in wanting to build something and thats the one she picked. Body work here we come. Hopefully the body will turn out ok, i'll try i know that. It's really something though, shes 9 and a rather hyper person and normally has little patience. But when we sit down to work on this model she doesnt twitch and shift in her seat like normal and she suddenly has patience. This will turn out to be my favorite build of all time i'm sure. I've had to tell the wifey to be quiet a couple times so far LOL... she panicked a little seeing a knife in her hand the first time, so I had to tell her shes had a lesson and shes been doing great so if your gonna be that way you need to leave the room. And also had to tell her to be quiet its just paint and its dry so you need to be quiet and let her have fun (she had a little bit of paint on her fingers). LOL... Thanks Ron
GTMust Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Sounds like you're having fun mixed in with the frustration ... and fun with your stepdaughter is the kind of thing that life's all about.... right? I've also been having some paint problems lately. I believe it's due to the humidity in the air, as my usual spray cans aren't performing like they usually do. Like tiny blisters appear in the paint after it hits the plastic.... with or without primer. That's the problem with spraying outdoors, either too cold or too humid! If humidity IS the problem....... then it'll be a few months before I can finish any projects! I keep promising myself an indoor spray booth, but can't figure out where to exhaust the fumes........ (no windows in the basement). Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Oh absolutely your so right! I think it's the coolest thing I think you hit the nail on the head with the humidity. Humidity summer time can be god aweful here. I'd love to have one of those booths myself but cant justify the 500 dollar hit right now though. I've seen one for 150 but cant figure out why its so much cheaper except for it being a little smaller. I could always build one I guess, but whenever I read about them there is always a debate aboout which way to build them and it seems to go 50/50 on which way to go so i dont know lol... Thats tuff not having any windows in your basement, only idea that pops in my head is maybe putting your booth some where by your dryer if your dryers in the basement. And then you could figure out a simple and non-time consuming way to swap your booth hose with your dryers. I mean that would work right? Most dryer vent tubes are like 4 inches or more I think. Ron

Ron Our washer/dryer is in the kitchen area on the main floor. Not sure my wife would approve! There was an interesting post about a cheap, home built spray booth (in the tips and tricks section... I think?). Dr Cranky posted one built from a plastic container, and another more recent post from someone else. There may have been more so you'll probably have to search back a way. I have thought of core drilling through the basement wall for a vent but I'm scared of what horrors that may create in my 110 year old house.... and who knows how the spiders and other creep crawlies would react!! I'll probably finish up with a window airconditioner in my garden shed with a heater for those winter months...... brrrr! Ahhhh.... decisions, decisions....... Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 Thanks for the info Tony i really appreciate it. Im checking out the tips and tricks section. And i'm with ya I think i'd be leaning towards the garden shed too. I dont like the idea of doing that to a wall in a basement either. Just sounds like a bigger pita then its worth if the garden shed would work out for you. I have an update on the build, took some quick pics just for an idea of what i've been up to, so I think they are actually worse then what they normally are But I have tailights drying, gas tank in place, and steering, shifter and window installed. Interior is just as plain and undetailed as can be, kind of horrible I guess, it just wasnt something I was focussing on. I need to do just that on my next couple of projects (focus on building interior skills). Not that I have any other skills perfected yet but hopefully you know what I mean. Still deciding on whether I wunna leave the headers white or go ahead and paint them the sea blue like the body color is. Not sure which way would look better, kinda leaning towards white but idk... so anyway on with a few pics... Thanks for looking Tailights (drying) that are from a 32 chevy truck kit... and Thanks guys.
GTMust Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Take a look at the way John Teresi did his headers on the Nascar Matador project. He got them looking real with a "bluing " process over the chrome. Just like you'd see as the heat changes the color. Lots of fantastic ideas come from his builds. Tony
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 Oh I know, he's incredible. Unfortunately I dont have an airbrush yet though. I'd have to do a really fine tape job anyway, cause when I got them right I primed them and unfortunately I think thats the reason why I cant get them back out (I drilled holes in the block to insert them into. Guess that was a bad idea, or maybe a half way decent one if id of made the holes a hair bigger to allow for paint. Live and learn LOL. Think it would turn out ok if I tried to brush it, maybe water down the colors first or something?? Thanks alot Tony
