Hey all,

I've been prepping my Pontiac front and rear grills/bumpers for chrome, but I was wondering if I should prime the parts first,

i.e. primer, then gloss black, then Alclad chrome....

or....just shoot the black, then the Alclad?

Any recommendations? :)

Cheers, Ian

Yes, primer is a very good idea. I prefer to use Alclad's black base and it will not stick to anything unless there is a primed surface. But whatever black base you use, primer will help provide a more even surface for the chrome.

the other day i painted an exhaust with alclad

it was made up from parts of all sprue, some 1/8th styrene tube and some aluminum tube for resonators

i wetsanded the whole thing and didnt bother putting a primer down , just went straight over it with the painters touch gloss black

i think it was my best alclad so far B)

I think it would depend on the parts being done with Alclad. if the parts are smooth, without any flaws or marks that would show, you can go with the black base without priming. The Alclad black base works very well this way. If it's something large or has had alterations/bodywork done to it, priming is a must to ensure an even base for the black to lay down on. Any imperfection will show up in the final result.

Are you supposed to use enamel or lacquer gloss black for alclad? Where is alclad sold? I have never tried it, but I am very interested to try it out. Oh and does it have to be thinned or just sprayed as is? Does it have to be polished afterwards or does it lay down nearly perfect?

EDIT: I just found a place that sells it in my city and ###### it's expensive $13 for an oz. Does this stuff go fast? I mean would an oz be enough to lets say spray a 1/24 car? Do you need to use a lot of it to get the desired effects? One or more layers? Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm curious

To your question of does it go fast , yes it does, 1 bottle ( from exsperience) would be enough to spray a body, i used the alclad magnesium to paint a Ferrari 360 and still have some left, it is exspensive but it is nice paint,

It is pre thinned, shake well and airbrush only , you cant use it with a paint brush

this is the Alclad web site, lots of info on their products

http://www.alclad2.com/

give it a go B)
