I've gotten pretty far along with this project so I decided to take a few WIP pics. Color is Black on Tor Red (Hemi Orange to Dodge owners...), and also includes a vinyl top courtesy of Model Master paints and BMF.

After the car was hit multiple times with Tor (Red, or Hemi Orange, for now just saying "Tor"...) and setting for 48 hours, I masked off the fenders and trunk then hit the top with alternating Tamiya Flat Black/Semi-Gloss Black for a darker look than what flat black alone could provide. After I had that cleanly down,I masked the top hood and window sills area and sprayed 2 coats of Model Master Black Vinyl paint on it, but couldn't get it to look "vinyl" enough. I then grabbed the MM Fabric Gray paint (Fabric Tan can also be used...) and sprayed a single coat on the top, let it dry 2 hours, then hit it with Vinyl paint again.

MUCH better......

And a quick shot of the engine.

Dusty03.jpg

A shot of the undercarriage with a fast pass of flat black spray for a dirtier look...

Dusty04.jpg

And a better shot of the engine...

Dusty05.jpg

And before I could pull up the masking tape, I laid down a silver trim line where the vinyl would meet the metal...

Dusty06.jpg

And last set of shots for now. I used BMF to cover the small thin silver line and give it a straighter edge look to it. The last picture was taken by my Blackberry because it was easier to see the vinyl look in that pic than in the others...

Next: Working on a "Halloween" interior!!!!

Thanks for the comments!!

Ok. Decals are on the body and I'm prepping it for a dip in Future...

Duster26.jpg

Duster29.jpg

NOTE: I've already cut out the "clear" decal windows from the taillight area, glad I spotted that and put the decals on BEFORE final build!! The instructions really need to make that known...

Duster30.jpg

And a shot of the Duster with my Sublime Green Demon, which is waiting for decals...

Duster31.jpg

Now I have the Viper wheels that came in the "Duster Street Machine" kit, but those look terrible compared to the factory wheels that came in the "340" kit. I had to use the normal wheels/tires in the Demon build along with the engine, chassis, glass, and other parts (which was why I bought that kit in the first place...), so I pulled out my parts box and found these wheels/tires from one of the Revell MotorCity kits...

Duster32.jpg

Duster33.jpg

If I use them, this would be more like a restomod car (have already set up the rear axle with riser blocks for proper fitment, can remove them if need-be...), but what I really want are those factory wheels. Anyone have a spare set for trade?

Let me clarify the above post. I bought the "Duster Street Machine" when I already had the Dodge Demon resin kit, but there were Viper wheels in the kit. I liked the form of the Duster/Demon body so much that I bought another "340" kit to work on (which I'm doing now...), and robbed that kit of its factory wheels/tires for a more accurate Demon. So, basically all I have left is the "340" kit, currently being built, the Viper wheels/tires from the "Street Machine" kit, and these wheels/tires from Revell. Again, if anyone has a set of the factory wheels and tires, PM me!

looks good but if i could make a suggestion...i would remove the little strip of BMF behind the doors where the vinyl meets the metal and put down a little strip od halfround styrene and then put the BMF over that

i think it would look more reaslistic that way

and about cutting out the "tail light decals"

i build a 74 charger that has the flat black hood insert and a black decal surrounding it

you would think they cut out the section for the black insert (about a square inch) but no

good thing there are nice people on this forum who supplied me with an extra decal sheet

Great suggestion! If I had known that before I painted and dipped it in Future... :)

Ohh well. At least I'm still learning. That trick will really help with another model I have coming up in a while though. And glad you recovered from that decal error. I'm seeing more and more decals like that. I know Revell, MPC, etc... probably doesn't have the time or resources to correct it, but at least they could mention it in the instructions. And I'm also seeing more kits with decals for the engine bay and NOTHING printed in the instructions on placement. I'm now hitting the net prior to building any car just to get reference pix.

Imagine how many reference books it would take if there was no internet....

Robert, got a picture of the rims you're looking for? I've got three of this kit, and a ton of old Mopar factory rims, so I'm sure I've got what you're looking for!

Actually, I've got someone sending me a set, but thanks!

Ok, I will get some pics up soon, but this car is almost finished. Once the wheels get here I'll test fit them to the chassis and get the body on, then finish off with the engine bay hoses and detail.

Thanks for all the help and ideas!

Interior is actually called "Halloween Interior" and was a factory option for the Dusters. I saw two different versions of this interior, and they are complete opposites of one another (think Tor Red seats with black material, Tor vinyl with black inserts, etc...). I chose the black with Tor so that it wouldn't look so flashy.

Interior looks good probably better than the actual factory all orange seats and door panels (black seats with orange inserts were optional on the Road Runner that year)

"Factory correct" doesn't always result in the coolest look- if it always did there would be no reason to customize the 1:1 either B)

My sentiments exactly... :D

Well, a little more research and I would have caught this (it has happened to me twice now, arrggrrhhh!!!). The side windows are notorious for popping in when the chassis is mated to the body. Because I've already assembled the engine bay, I have to leave these off for fear I'll destroy the body somehow. I did try manipulating the windows from the outside in, but like the Dodge Demon I built before, it's nearly impossible unless the whole assembly is taken apart.

Well, it looks nice how it is now, I'll post up pix when I get the wheels and tires put in.

I guess there's something to be said for the "crude" MPC annuals with one-piece glass, molded in pillars, and tub interiors compared to the "modern, engineered" kit LOL

you know, i was readin the "under glass" post for the demon and this duster shows a lot of improvement on your skills allready

i find little things go wrong with my builds almost every time so dont get too bummed out by the glass issues, you're definatly moving in the right direction

Much appreciated. It means a lot to know I'm making some sort of progress in my skills, so I'll keep passing them along to others.

Build is now complete, check out the "Under Glass" section!
