Jeff Johnston Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I painted something else over the weekend. Building this for my Uncle. Might not have been the fastest, but certainly of the best looking Vettes ever made IMHO. Oh, and this is Monogram kit (Revell) which turns out to be a turd compared to the MPC... I always loved the 70's MPC Corvette Kits
Monty Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Jeff, I agree with you regarding the MPC 'Vettes. It's hard to beat the fully rotating halfshafts or the poseable steering, and I think the MPC small block Chevy is better than the one in the Revellogram Pace car, although I wish MPC had made it with the dual snorkel air cleaner and finned valve covers (L-82). I've been wanting to do a replica of my 1:1 '80 - The Scarlet Snail, but I've never found a good way to replicate the mirrored (but translucent) t-tops What are you using to mask around the fenderwells?
ismaelg Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Great start on a great looking Vette! I'll be following up this one very closely.... Thanks,
Jeff Johnston Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Some red stripes..next of to the clear coat.
cruz Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Some red stripes..next of to the clear coat. Hey Jeff, beautiful job you are doing there, you think you can take pictures of it with a light background so we can admire it even more? I am sure that paint job is really going to pop with a different background. Again, beautiful work and your separation lines on the paint are perfect.................
Jeff Johnston Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 I put the decals on. Now I am ready for the clear coat, which will be a 2 part urethane clear. Since the rear quarter kit decals are ruined, I'll put some Fred Cady decals on after the clear (clear will ruin those fragile decals).
Marc @ MPC Motorsports Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 I put the decals on. Now I am ready for the clear coat, which will be a 2 part urethane clear. Since the rear quarter kit decals are ruined, I'll put some Fred Cady decals on after the clear (clear will ruin those fragile decals). Overcoat those decals with Microscale Liquid Decal Film before you apply them and use two coats of you like. It will protect them from clearcoat damage. I use it on all my decals now and have good luck clearing over them with Tamiya TS-13. IIRC, you use two-part urethane, so you should be fine with the Liquid Decal Film. Give it a try sometime. If not on this one, the next one.
Jeff Johnston Posted April 22, 2007 Author Posted April 22, 2007 Cleared !! Will try to polish today...though since its going to be in the 70's here again today, I think there is a good chance I'll be spending all day oputside in the lawn...doing chores.
MrObsessive Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Beautiful paint job Jeff! I remember when that was a new car and the sheer craziness that surrounded trying to buy one. People were trying to get one in the worst way...............I've heard stories of long time friendships ended because of this car!
steelerdan43 Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Beautiful, just beautiful... Great job with the red stripe, was it masked off or did you use decals??
Jeff Johnston Posted April 22, 2007 Author Posted April 22, 2007 Bill I am building this for my Uncle as he was one of the lucky new 78 Pace car owners back in 78. He sent me the kit to build for him, which I gladly am doing. Though the 78 was not the fastest Corvette (by far), my opinion is that even today, you;d be hard pressed to find a better looking Corvette ! A 78 with an L-48 and a 4 speed "ain't no slouch" either !!! Dan..the red strip is actually very thin vinyl stickers typically used for RC cars. I cut it in thin strips and layed ot on. I then cleared over them. Looks prety good...except I have to admit I did not get the widths perfect all the way around. Though its hard to sitting on the table, it'll be noticible in close up pics.
Jeff Johnston Posted May 14, 2007 Author Posted May 14, 2007 Just a couple more progress pictures. Put in the windows and added the spoilers. Interior
