Brad-M Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Gents, Not sure if this should go here, but here goes...I am venturing into my first car model and have a few questions. Do you guys build up the body as much as possible to get to the painting stage or do you follow the instructions? The front and rear peices aren't great fits and will require some sanging and putty to transition smoothly. How do you guys get the chrome trim around windows and edges of the wheel wells? Do you remove the chrome on wheels and bumpers and paoint chrome (alclad) or leave as is?
Lownslow Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 yup i assemble and prime the body first even if im selling as a prepaint it looks better in the end, BMF and super sharp blades, i leave them as is if theyre lowriders if i wanna dull them down i coat them with future
diymirage Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Hi Brad thechnically, these questions go in the general forum and we save this section only to share our tips, trick and tutorials but...to awnser your question, when possible i will put the body together as much as i can but keep in mind you can not always get the chassis in AFTER the bumpers are on, so tape everything together and try it before you put glue it on, it would be a shame to have to undo all your hard work the chrome tim is done with a product called Bare Metal Form (BMF for short) which is a model specific aluminum foil with adhesive backing as for the rims, usually i leave them chromed and touch up little nicks with silver paint after that i use a black wash, there are some specific washes on the market but i use watered down black enamel paint this will lay in the low spots and dry there giving the part more depth (i actually use this on engine blocks aswell, anything that needs to look more 3D) i use allclad occasionaly but mostly on scratchbuild parts like exhausts or parts that have gone through heavy modification
Brad-M Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Hi there, I won't install the pumpers, just the fron and rear ends of the car which will be painted the same base colour as the rest of the car. I build military aircraft and vehicles, so I am familiar with washes etc, but since re-joining the hobby 15 years ago, I've never tried a shiney car. Thanks Brad Hi Brad thechnically, these questions go in the general forum and we save this section only to share our tips, trick and tutorials but...to awnser your question, when possible i will put the body together as much as i can but keep in mind you can not always get the chassis in AFTER the bumpers are on, so tape everything together and try it before you put glue it on, it would be a shame to have to undo all your hard work the chrome tim is done with a product called Bare Metal Form (BMF for short) which is a model specific aluminum foil with adhesive backing as for the rims, usually i leave them chromed and touch up little nicks with silver paint after that i use a black wash, there are some specific washes on the market but i use watered down black enamel paint this will lay in the low spots and dry there giving the part more depth (i actually use this on engine blocks aswell, anything that needs to look more 3D) i use allclad occasionaly but mostly on scratchbuild parts like exhausts or parts that have gone through heavy modification
