Terry Sumner Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Some very nice looking winners! Anyone from here??? http://www.revell.com/contest/revellgearz-winners.html
Mr. Moparman Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 (edited) Darn! I'm dissapointed.. Was it my lack of spark plug wire? Or was it the lack of paint on the sides of the chassis, either way i'm still ticked Edited August 8, 2011 by Mississippi Resins
Jantrix Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Honestly? Aside from two or three really nice ones I'm a bit underwhelmed. We see much better work on your average day on this forum, than is represented in their winners/honorable mentions.

No offense to any of the winners, they are all nice enough models, but apart from two or three that might place at a local model contest I don't see anything of "National" contest caliber.

Funny choices....as you said......That said, here are the TV dates The winning entries will be on GearZ on SPEED Channel: Season V, Episode 13 Saturday Morning 8/20/11 @ 8:30 am EST NEW Sunday Morning 8/21/11 @ 7:30 am EST Thursday Overnight 8/25/11 @ 3:00 am EST Edited August 9, 2011 by MIKE THE MANIAC
Roadkill2525 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I know what's wrong with all those winning kits, nothing flashy and shiny to make your eyes glaze over but just clean and precise building from what I see, you know the type of work that is ignored here.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Hum, very interesting. I like a few of the models that won. I hope they keep doing the contest, it sure does get lots of folks building, which is what it's all about.
Chuck Most Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I'd say it looks like a pretty fair cross section, and I do recognize the work of a couple of guys.
shucky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) Wow, no offense to the winners but not too impressive considering this was a "skills" contest. Edited August 9, 2011 by shucky

I wouldn't say they are ignored. I, for one, love seeing cleanly built kits - box stock, factory stock, etc. I think the Mercury looks great - smooth paint and clean build. The 32 rat I will have to take a closer look... I can imagine it would be quite difficult to judge a contest with pictures only.
Guest Johnny Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Was FORD a sponsor??? I thought they all were good looking builds! Nothing "over the top" or "bottom of the barrel" in there! Looks like they chose to go average to just above (where most builders really are) in their judging!
shucky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Was FORD a sponsor??? I thought they all were good looking builds! Nothing "over the top" or "bottom of the barrel" in there! Looks like they chose to go average to just above (where most builders really are) in their judging! Than it wasn't a skills contest nor a contest at all really. Picking "average" or above average is not picking the best. Great of them to get more people to build and spend money on their products but the rest is a farce.
Terry Sumner Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 The Green 32 Tudor with the star on the door has one of my favorite goofs....wrinkled slicks at rest. Now maybe they are what came in the kit but that doesn't excuse the fact that they are on backwards......
Tonioseven Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 At least it got people building; it IS just a hobby for most of us. I'm happy for the winners. I entered but just for fun.
Danno Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Yikes! A national contest and that's the best they could come up with? Once again, I have to agree with Harry's observation. (Emoticon indicating OMG! here.)
charlie8575 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 The customized '58 Chevy was interesting. I thought that deserved some notice for effort if not complete execution. My personal favorite of that lot, though, was that gorgeous Woody. That came out very nicely, I thought. Overall, though, I agree. While it's nice to help people feel that their efforts will be appreciated, it would've been better to just post all the pictures entered and select the winner if they wanted everyone to get some kind of recognition. I also agree with Mark, I'll bet bad photography had a lot to do with the picks. Charlie Larkin
Dr. Cranky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Tonio, that's a wonderful model, and it shows the high quality entry that many of the folks on this forum entered. Something tells me the judges had a very hard time picking from pictures alone . . . but what the heck, there's always next year, I hope.
mr cheap Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 i love this forum brings back a lot of memorys...when i had time and patience .. to set down and work on one thing for 50 to 100 hrs
Dr. Cranky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 James, time will always be fleeting . . . the only way I know of slowing it down is to build something, even if its through a sleepless night, which happens to me more often than not.
Harry P. Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I thought they all were good looking builds! Nothing "over the top" or "bottom of the barrel" in there! Looks like they chose to go average to just above (where most builders really are) in their judging! I sure hope that was not the case! That goes against the whole idea of what a "contest" is supposed to be!
Dr. Cranky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I think in the coming years, if the contest continues, they'll have to look closer at levels of skill, in particular with painting and detailing, etc . . . it also reminds me of how utterly difficult it must be to be a judge and then have to run the gaunlet.
Harry P. Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 To me this was like a national make and take type contest to just get more young people interested in our hobby and generate more sales for Revell which just might help pay for new tooling. But they had a kid's category. And they had a "novice" and a "skilled" category (don't know who decided who was a novice and who was "skilled"). From the Revell website: The competition was fierce in the first National Model Car Championships, sponsored by Stacey David’s GearZ and Revell. Many proud model builders put their most impressive craftsmanship and attention to detail on the task. So... just some PR talk, then???
SuperStockAndy Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Not to brag, but I think with a little more practice I could rank my way up there.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Again, I think things will improve . . . they will iron out the kinks, but I do believe in the fact that this WILL BE GOOD for Revell, which means they will have more money to get more new tools and kits out . . . which then makes us all happier recipients . . .
