Prostreet Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Doing some carbon decals(scalemotorsports) on a F1 build. I just recently decided to start modeling agian, I never cleared decals before. What would be the best clear to use? Local Hobby Shop has Tamiya and model masters clear in a Spray. I will also be using microsol On the decals, Not sure if that matters or not. Joe
VW Dave Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Use what ever is compatible with the paint you have already used on the model, or just go with the Tamiya TS-13 clear if all you're covering is decals on plastic. Model Master enamel clear is destined to turn amber over the course of a few years, so I'd avoid that. A light, misty inital coat will help revent the decals from 'floating;' beyond that, add as many coats as needed and polish to achieve your required results.
Prostreet Posted August 25, 2011 Author Posted August 25, 2011 Thx. for the info Dave, I appreciate it. Joe
Scale-Master Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Be very careful with TS-13 over those decals. Dry coats only, never wet. Or use enamel. The slight yellowing is unlikely to make much if any visible difference over the carbon fiber. Over white, yes, but not so much on darker colors. And keep it to light coats too.
prostockmania Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 I second scale master on the Tamiya clear, if you use wet coats, it can wrinkle the decals. I use ppg shopline clearcoat, descent price, good results.
