Dr. Cranky Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I don't know if this kind of thread has been established before on the forum, but I am interested in getting a discussion started on paint finishes: i.e., custom, graphics, flat finishes, suede. Colors, etc . . . anything to help the rest of us stayed inspired about the possibilities of paint finishes and colors . . . I am hoping folks will feel free to discuss their preferences, and maybe post pictures of either real vehicles or pictures of their models here. Thank you, DC
highway Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 (edited) Did somebody say custom?? This is the perfect paint for a custom paint job when you can't figure out what color you want! The color on the cab and sleeper is Rustoleum Colorshift Galaxy Blue, and in certain light like sunlight, I have seen blue, purple, teal, red, and gold show up, even though the camera only pics up the purple and blue the best. I also painted the frame of this truck in another shade of the Colorshift called Gamma Green. The perdominate colors I've seen, just as the pic shows, is green and purple, and a little hint of gold in just the right angle light. EDIT: I've seen the Colorshift paints only at my local Lowe's, and a can is about $15, and when I first found it, a can was $20! The 2 cans it took for the cab and sleeper and the one can for the frame puts the total of this paint job at $60!! Edited October 1, 2011 by highway
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Matthew--I like that, but it's got a little chameleon in it, doesn't it?
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 I have House of Kolor flattening agent which I might try on a few builds coming up . . . different colors . . .
highway Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Matthew--I like that, but it's got a little chameleon in it, doesn't it? That, or it just can't make up it's mind!!
scalenut Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Did somebody say custom?? This is the perfect paint for a custom paint job when you can't figure out what color you want! I have to say, thank goodness that fad died in the 80's early 90's
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Andy, what replaced it? What are the trends out there right now? I know House of Kolor has just released their Shimmrin 2 line but the prices per ounce are exorbitant!
highway Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Andy, what replaced it? What are the trends out there right now? Was kinda wondering that myself, especially since the colors I used are currently available.
scalenut Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 (edited) It's still out there , but most of the time I see it around here,,, is on a 80's camaro or whatnot...it just looks putrid to me , that blue green brown shifting color that comes in a spray can... I'm sure some different colors, done right, on the right car would be more like it. we just don't have much cool running around my area with killer paint jobs ,, except for donks and lowriders and lots of them Edited October 1, 2011 by scalenut
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Interesting, and I think of paint jobs in terms of levels of difficulty, and you mention lowriders which to me are at the top because of all the masking steps the painter has to take, then at the lowest level I would imagine single colors done perfectly (the gold standard for most vehicles, regardless of style) and somewhere in the middle you have the mainstay of the customizing world, fades, two-tones, simpler graphics like flames, scallops, etc . . .
scalenut Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 (edited) that's what I mean doc ,, all the killer paintjobs I see around here are on lowriders, donks, and sclades. Edited October 1, 2011 by scalenut
tabsscale1 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 So you want something like this. Omly drawback as i had to strip it the other night and starting it all over.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Donks are often painted with the same flair and skill as lowriders, but most of the ones I've seen locally are painted-at-home jobs, even the fogged paint jobs, and they don't have the flashyness of professionally painted ones . . . I'm going to Google Image search and see if I can continue to find good candidates, regardless of style. Again, the idea I'm trying to get across is to come up with subject matter that is inspiring!
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Todd, that looks good, but you are redoing it? It looks like you have the right idea . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Here are a couple of good examples of well painted Donks and Lowriders: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_s77XPQZjRl0/THh2hxLvthI/AAAAAAAAHoo/t4cGoPF4ITQ/s1600/low+rider+70s.jpg[/img You don't have to like the style to appreciate a good paint job!
tabsscale1 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Todd, that looks good, but you are redoing it? It looks like you have the right idea . . . Yep shot clear over and was polishing some goobers out and dropped it took a couple chunks out an figured i couldn't get it to match so decided to start over
scalenut Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 this would keep someone busy for a while... talk about candy !
Sixx Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Andy, what replaced it? What are the trends out there right now? I know House of Kolor has just released their Shimmrin 2 line but the prices per ounce are exorbitant! I did a 69 Camaro with a HOK color shift...blue to red...cost $30 for only 2oz.!!!! Sixx
MikeMc Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 (edited) I've seen less of the Tribal graphics and more leaning toward the industrial--techno airbrush jobs... Tear aways are also seeing more action Edited October 1, 2011 by MIKE THE MANIAC
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Wow, now we are talking . . . yeah, anything paint related is good for the spirit! Bring it on! LOVE IT!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Todd, those are marvelous . . . I gotta practice doing this kind of paintjob on models. I love it. Who started this trend in painting cars? Was it Starbird?
