Camshaft Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Hi all, this is my first build in a long time and my first build on these forums. I picked the kit up on a whim on a slow and dreary Sunday and and this is where I am a few days later. The goal is to have it completed by November 6th, so that I can enter it in the IPMS show at Kirtland High School. I'm building it box stock with a few minor changes to the bodywork. I deleted the bumpers and I'm also planning on filling the holes for the cowl lights. Lastly, I've smoothed over the running boards. This effort to simplify the model reminds me of a conversation between Little Bill and Kurt in "Boogie Nights": "Jack wants a minimal thing..." "Right, well, very often, minimal means a lot more photographically than I think, well... than I think most people understand..." No kidding. I've spent innumerable hours filing and smoothing over every little imperfection in the body. But I see a light at the end of the tunnel and I think it's going to look great. I have a really dynamite colour picked out and, even if it gets passed over on the judge's table (very likely) it'll have a special place in my display case. Since the kit dates back to the '60s, I'm definitely going for that look with it. The end result will hopefully look like something off a Jan & Dean album cover. Without further ado, here is how she sits now: Hey, go easy on me. It's my first build.
Tom Setzer Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Welcome to the Forum! I built a couple of the 34s in the nineties, and I swaped out the motors for better detailed ones from Monogram kits, both were small block Chevy motors from 55/56 Chevy kits, if you are planing on enter it in a show, I would recomend that you find an engine that you like from one of the newer model kits. A little bit of kit bashing for better engines, wheels and tyres will go a long way toward making your model a winner. You don't have to do a lot of serious modifications, just what you feel comfortable doing. A well sprayed and polished paint job will make for about 80% of the judge's score, and you already have the body filling work done, check your work again before laying down any paint and make sure all of the sanding dust and any oil from your fingers has been washed off. I will be looking foward to seeing your progress on this build! CHEERS! Tom
Dr. Cranky Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Great look and progress. Keep it going. More eye candy, please.
Camshaft Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Well, I worked over the running boards more...sprayed some primer...looked okay...sprayed my colour coat...and the running boards came through again! Looks like I'll need to strip it and use some putty...but for now, enjoy this preview of the final colour! I'm not too concerned...this is a learning experience, and hey, it only cost me one night's worth of work. Now, a question...what do you guys recommend for spray-on chrome? I know it's not gonna be perfect, but it's gotta look better than silver spray paint...
Tom Setzer Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I use Alcad Chrome sprayed in a couple of light coats over Gloss Black Enamel. Then sealed with Alcad Sealer, Do NOt Spray Clear over Alcad as it will kill the metal look. CHEERS! Tom

Tom Setzer Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Alcad is airbrush only. As far as I know there isn't a spray can paaint that will do chrome correctly. CHEERS! Tom

Tom http://www.spazstix.com/xcart/10009-ULTIMATE-MIRROR-CHROME-AEROSOL-3.5oz.html ^^ Use this over the aerosol black base coat from the same manufacturer...those without access to an airbrush will get results similar to Alclad II with a spray can. It's a pretty good finish, though there are some that say the airbrush method with Alclad offers superior results.
jbwelda Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 looks great and from my experience you can get good luck with testors chrome silver buzzcan especially if you have a little luck, use very light coats and mostly spray only small parts. dont spray clear over it and try to handle it as little as possible and if necessary, with cotton gloves. it particularly looks great for a less shiny look with dullcote sprayed over it lightly. killer truck and you do have to watch that ghosting effect when eliminating molded in details. sometimes they take some time to come back hence they might not have shown under the primer at first.
Camshaft Posted October 29, 2011 Author Posted October 29, 2011 Tonight's progress isn't really that impressive...I bought, hopefully, the last of the supplies I need for this at my LHS and I soaked my framerails in brake fluid. I also filled the seams and sinkholes in the engine, and the holes for the top & cowl lights in the body tub. I also had to fill a sinkhole in one of the wheel covers (not pictured). Already getting good use out of the putty I bought today...
