Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Hey guys i was just wondering if the 440 with the 4 barrel carb was considered a high performance engine?
Eshaver Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 In the strictest sense of the word, yes . It was used in Police cars here and was extensively seen in the full size Dodge line . Ed Shaver
Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Thanks Ed!, so a 440 with a 2bbl would be just considered a normal 440?
High octane Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 It most certainly is and the color is street hemi orange. That also goes for the '70 440 engine too.
Harry P. Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 It depends on your own definition of "high performance." A 440 would be considered "high performance" by most people, I think.
Swifster Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) Thanks Ed!, so a 440 with a 2bbl would be just considered a normal 440? The 440 never came with a 2-bbl carb. Standard 440's had 350 horsepower and HP's had 375 horsepower. The 6 pack had 3 2-bbl carbs and 390 HP. 383's had 2-bbl carbs as a base engine. In most applications, the 440 was Hemi Orange. But some were also Chrysler Blue. These engines usually ended up in C-Body and Y-Body cars, but some also ended up in Chargers and other cars with HP engines. Edited October 27, 2011 by Swifster
Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 i was just looking at an engine colour guide and it said the 440 was turqouise and 440 high perfromance was hemi orange http://www.turbinecar.com/misc/enginecolor.htm
Keef Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) The high output 440 was marketed as the Magnum in Dodges, the Super Commando in Plymouths, and the TNT in Chryslers. it was available as a 4bbl with 350hp or 375hp or the 6bbl engine with 390hp the standard 440-4bbl(350hp) was painted turqouise while the 375hp 4bbl engine and 6bbl engine were both painted orange Edited October 27, 2011 by Keef
Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 im building a 69 GTX , and i have been searching for pictures but i havent found any GTX's with a turqouise 440. Every other 440 was hemi orange
Keef Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 the high performance 440 was standard in the GTX in 1969 so orange would be the correct color
Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 would the 350 hp 440 have a different style air cleaner than the 375 hp 440 and 6bbl 440?
Keef Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 most likely the standard 350hp engine would have either a single or dual snorkle air cleaner depending upon what type of vehicle it was installed in.
Haubenschild Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 i guess the 440 will have to be orange ..
scale trucker Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 if it is a gtx then would be a 440 or hemi car anyways..so paint it orange and call it good.
Swifster Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) most likely the standard 350hp engine would have either a single or dual snorkle air cleaner depending upon what type of vehicle it was installed in. I've seen 440-4V cars with no snorkles. Just a round air cleaner. This photo is from a '68 GTX 440-4V... Um, I think this engine is blue. You can see the top of the valve covers. And engines in GTX's are the 375 HP engines. This one was a 4-speed with no power steering or brakes. And that was why it hit the freeway median. Edited October 28, 2011 by Swifster
