mikelo Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 (edited) *>>>Scroll down to see finished pictures<<<* Hi everybody. This is my first post here. I have been looking here around for quite a while, and seam to like the atmosphere here. Anyway, someone else from my club has posted pictures of his Mustang, so I thought you might enjoy seeing my idea. Since my first idea was already taken (darn Saleen), I decided to go a step further and try to get the new Mustang to look more like a 70 than the previous attemps. Here are some sketches of my concept. (I hope this works!) Since it has been a while since this project was started, I will skip right to the current pics. I choose to go with the original grabber orange color and will have the flat black scoop, tail lights and front spoiler (you can almost see it sitting below the front end.) It will be powered by the Super Stallion motor, looking more like you would see from the factory (less chrome ). Let me know your thoughts as I am not a "Big" Mustang fan  . I'd appreciate any input. Thanks, Edited December 4, 2007 by mikelo
Jairus Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 My personal opinion is that the 1969 Mustang marks the pinnacle of the brand styling. 1970 on the other hand was a move away from that formula! (Really makes me wonder why they didn't use a curved cove panel between the taillights....)1971 was completely wrong even tho I owned one and loved it.... it was too hard to see out of the back window and there were too many styling goofs in the design. I love your sketches and some of your ideas could easily make the current car more "retro". But Ford's track record is that once a winning design has been done, they milk it until sales slow and then slowly re-design it to death. (GM on the other hand just kills them.... ) How about fender top creases? Something both Camaro and Mustang and Charger retro designs left off?
Harry P. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Interesting ideas, Mike...but like Jairus, I think Mustang styling peaked in 1969. Moving the headlights inboard, like they did on the 70 version, never did much for me. It always struck me as king of "squinty-eyed", for some reason. But hey...that's just my opinion, nothing more. I think it's great to have another "stylist" hanging around here!
Harry P. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 BTW...here's an idea I had for the 69...kinda "Shelby-ish" in the taillights, but with a much larger rear window (and no trunk-it would have been a hatchback). Because your design is long and sleek (accomplished by filling in the coves and the quarter windows, for instance), I think full-width taillights would be right at home on your "1970".
Steve H. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Regardless of whether 69 or 70 (I personally like 70) was the peak of styling, this is a very well done re-style. The front end and hood are very nice and the c pillar is perfect. One thing that strikes me, after seeing a number of re-styles at GSL, is the rounded rear panel. The roundness just doesn't seem to fit the flow of the body lines, as that era had fairly flat panels. I'm not an auto stylist nor mustang expert, either... just an innocent bystander 8) Nice work!
mikelo Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 Wow! Thanks Harry. I do agree with both of you on the 69. That is my personal favorite. My first thought was to make it Shelbyish, but since everyone in my club (about 15 that have kits) is working on theirs, I thought I would try a little different route. I must say that I was definately looking at changing the tailights. In fact, that was what started my thought process (remember the concept car for this one?), as the existing ones remind me more of the 70 than the 69. This does follow Jairus' comments about redesigning to death as all the mods are just subtle tweeks that wouldn't require major mods. My problem now is, how do you put anything in the trunk now that the gas filler is mounted on it? Jairus- I like the idea of the fender top creases, and having owned a couple 72-74 Chargers, you'd think I would have caught that. I wish I would have thought of that before I painted it. I did manage to catch the raised center on the hood, and I think that made a big difference. Thanks for the comments guys.
david@Minidreams inc. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Hey man ! Great dio on the project ! then i kept reading and seen the project in progress! ALL I CAN SAY IS THATS A BAD SNAKE ! mikelo Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 (edited) Hey, its been almost a year, but I did not forget. Everyone's is due next week at our club. This is about 98% done, and is kind of sloppy for me. I did a quick wheel swap from the original (seemed reminisant of the mini lights). I have repositioned the air intake tubes as they looked hideous. I didn't know how to change the title, but I wanted to show how this finished off. Thanks for looking! crispy Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Mike, it looks great! I'm also not a big fan of the 70, having owned a 69 myself. I like your car since it is completely different than what I have seen. I will admit however something about the front of the car just isn't right to me. I can't quite put my finger on it. Just doesn't seem to fit in my opinion. I like your late wheel swap. Great job! Chris
mikelo Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 Yea, I wish I took more time with it. I knew the grill was a big part, but I just ran out of time to make something. I almost just used painted screen until a friend gave me that one. These pictures are not the best, but the front spoiler looks like it is just hanging there. It does look better in person. Thanks,
Marc @ MPC Motorsports Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Turned out nice, Mike!!! I'm a fan of all things Mustang...even the Mustang II's !!!
Gray Smith Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Mike, this Mustang looks great! I think you got just the right mix of new and retro...the TE37s also match the car very well.. Good to see you here too! Gray
mikelo Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 Thanks for the comments, & a big thanks to you Mr. Mike (I couln't remember what your name was here!) for the grill. I can already tell this is one of those builds I wish I took more time with, but things have been busy and it is done (almost). I can't wait to see Mr.Mike's as his had a little,,,, well should we say,,,,, accident. Watch for this one. I will say he has what appears to be the same wheels as David@minidreams, but black centers. I hope our club will have a good turn out. I might see if we can post some. I just realized I should have put this in the "under glass" section. Ooopps.
Peter Lombardo Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Great job...I really like the fact that you drew out the design first, and then built it to the design spec's. I really like the roof and front end treatment you chose and the color is perfect. Nice work.
