Haubenschild Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Its been almost a month since i last worked on this! , I have just apllied the decals on the side panels and installed the side view mirrors , the rear cowl is still giving me problems , the paint just doesnt want to come off! ,
Badluck 13 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Very nice capture of the McLaren!!!!.....this in my opinion was the time when these cars were pure Thoroughbreds!!!
Haubenschild Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 The rear cowl has been sanded smooth , ( it may not look that way but it is ) , after sealing it I will begin painting and hopefully not screw up again
Haubenschild Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Today I shot a light coat of Tamiya grey primer on the rear cowl
Haubenschild Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 (edited) Finnaly after 2 months the rear cowl has been succesfully painted , phew... , I will try and decal tommorow and hopefully it'll be under glass in a few days. ( sorry about the qaulity ) Edited January 25, 2012 by Haubenschild
vwrabbit Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Love these old McLarens and this one is fabulous! Awesome build! And I had the same problem w/that same exact color. Was able to buff it out though. Tim
SuperStockAndy Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 (edited) Looks good Liam! anyone know why the Tamiya kit as a small-block Chevy? i thought all of these were big-block powered Eh That looks too big to be a small block to me :\ Only bad thing is that the engine isn't detailed enough to get an accurate answer. 935k3 Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 The 1968 Mclaren M8A had an aluminum 427 engine. It was bored out to 465 cu. in. for the1969 mclaren M8B.
SuperStockAndy Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 ^^That's something I never knew, thanks.

SuperStockAndy Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 it looks big maybe because it's 1/18? it's also detailed enough to get an "accurate" answer as to if it is a scale representation of a small-block Chevy. the head detail, exhaust port spacing/flanges, head bolt details and the shape of the valve covers is undeniably small-block. is it a good representation of that engine? IMO, no it's not, but then considering the age of the kit and it's origins it's understandable. Andy, i've also noted that you are also building this same kit. i think you could use Liam's build as reference and for some inspiration I've already compared it to a 350 small block, didn't really see a resemblance in either of them. But, that's always an option because my eyes are only trained for 1/25 scale And yes, this topic is my primary source of reference for my build. I would've never known to have painted the valve covers Chevy red, because there are no good reference pictures
Haubenschild Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 (edited) Here is the finished product without the decals ( yes the rear cowl is slightly darker but i dont want to risk messing up again) Edited January 25, 2012 by Haubenschild
Scale-Master Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Looks like you were able to sort out the paint issues on the engine cover. It all looks really good from here.
