The Best Five Hours You Can Spend On HOW-TOs . . .

Recommended Posts

Gotta agree with everyone on this. I got the painting video last year and became so fired up watching it I felt like I had discovered the hobby all over again. I met Donn at NNL East this year and bought the second DVD. It's hard to explain how enthusiastic one gets watching these videos but they really are a blast.

Hmmmn ! What this thing you call " mind " ? I seem to have lost touch with that apparatus long , long ago !

You are correct , the possibilities are truly endless ! I promised myself that I would hit the booth over the next 3 days and just paint my behind off . The bodies are prepped and ready to go and so am I !

NNL East is going to see a complete color spectrum come next April , sunglasses will be a must have accessory ! The Pearl X glitter pearls caught my attention the other day , a bit of sifting to obtain the smaller flake , who knows ? Might be another new venue to play with that has endless possibilities .

For me , this is what the fun is all about !

Donn, the Pearl Ex works really well with the clear . . . there are so many possibilities with this stuff, I might just lose my mind for good! LOL!

Doc ,

Please explain this to our buddy Mike ! Tell him it doesn't hurt and no harm can come to him ! Lol !

Mikey .... Go to the light. ! Enamels , enamels , Mmmmn ! Preeeetttyyyyy , Shhiiinnnnyyy !

Doggone it ! Where's Crazy Jim when I need him ?????

LOL! Yes, lots of running back and forth from the LHS, that's what it all means. Suddenly I wished these testors paints would come in larger quantities. But I guess the bright side is you have to plan each paintjob and then the fun is in searching for just the right colors. Or blending your own.

Virgil ,

Breath , Son , deep breaths ! Lol ! Yep ! It is addicting ! Tomorrow is my day for it , Jack Bouman is coming in from York Pa. In the morning to paint in the booth with me .

Do me a favor , Doc ! Hide the package that the DVDs came in so your Honey can't track me down and brain me with a skillet . If she finds that return address , I'm hurtin' for certain !

Just out of curiosity , besides trips to the hobby shop , have you even left your shop ? You know , sleep , eat , etc ! I can't bust on you too much for this , I'm guilty as charged . This is why there is not a clock in the shop , time has noooo relevance when I'm in there ! I love the smell of enamel in the morning !

You , Sir , are now officially , enamel corrupted ! Ain't it grand ? Lol !

I've been using the Testor's airbrush thinner with my enamels. Aside from the drying time, I'm pretty happy with the results. Now, I have to try the lacquer thinner.

What kind of primer do you use? Model Master primer is working well for me. It doesn't bury the detail and holds up to lacquers. I just wish it came in bigger containers. Something good, but cheap would be a welcome change.

Dave ,

I don't use primer as a rule , with standard colors , I simply shoot the color directly onto the bare plastic . I do however , prep my bodies by sanding all the way up to 12000 under cold running water .

When it comes to pearls or metallics , I use Testors aluminum metallizer . I sand the body the same way , wash it , blow it dry with compressed air , shoot the metallizer on , 30 seconds later , I'm applying my color coats .

When I do use primer , I use the Testors cut at a 2 to 1 ratio with cheap laquer thinner . I only use the primer if I have done extensive repairs or body work to the model's body . It goes on thin , drys quick and tight with no loss of detail .

Thanks. I always seem to be modifying or filling something, so I'm always priming. Think we could get Testors to sell us 6 oz bottles for $10? :) I like the idea of using a silver undercoat.

Time to head for the garage. . .

Donn, yes, I haven't left the bench in days. LOL! It's all in a day's fun. The results are amazing, and the lacquer does cut down the waiting time to about exactly three days, which is better than the 12 I used to have to wait . . .

Next up is getting some of these models done and photographed . . . stay tuned in for more.

G,

I may be cheap but I ain't easy , 2 for the price of none is the going rate ! Lol !

Come on into the 'Burg for a week or so , stay at Hotel Yost and we'll airbrush till we drop ! Enamel users only , Evil Laquer Users need not apply ! Bwahahaha !

Truth be told .... All kind of laquer paints laying around the shop these days . Seems the HO train addiction has remanifested itself , baaaaddd juju when that starts. Lord help me , it's that train jones ..... Again. !

Today was a good example if that , Virgil ! Jack showed up this morning , he painted his two bodies , and I painted a couple of mine . Hung out together for awhile and then he headed out on a 4 hr trip back home.

Jack and several others have stayed for a weekend here and there . Whole lotta shop time , catching up with what everybody has on the bench , going out to dinner , cocktails , and a whole bunch of good natured stone bustin'! Wish we could all do it more often ... But ... !

Kathie loves it ! I get a kick out of watching her and Jack tangle ! Verbal abuse at it's best !

Oh well , back into the booth ! I'm on a roll today and I don't want to stop now . Ummm , paint fumes !

Donn, I hope you'll share what you are working on with us here . . . it's always a real treat, and man in just one week I have learned a great deal about working on my engines, and more . . . I tell you again, I haven't been this excited about building models since when I was a kid.

Also, hope you will get a third video into production (advance skills, etc . . . ) in the near future. Keep up the great work, and conversations.

Agh , jeeez , Virg , where do I start ? I need to reshoot the hood scoop for the Charger I sent you pictures of . Once I get that squared away , the car is a wrap !

The ' 66 Nova was taken back apart , I wasn't happy with the front windshield so I replaced it . The interior base twisted and I need to replace it. After this is finished , the car gets mailed to Nevada .

Today was two - tone day . A ' 53 Ford , ' 55 Chevy , and a Hudson each got their first color . A Revell Nova and '66 Impala are now Butter Yellow . The ' 48 Ford is now Lauren's Lime , really looking forward to this build , by the way !

Sorry , I never took the time to go with photobucket , so no pictures ! It's on the to do list , believe me !

As for a third DVD , there are more than that in my pointed little head . Problem is , the cost is prohibitive , to say the least ! Charlie from ProTech and I have discussed a project as well . I need to line up a support team for that one. , trying to get everybody together is a real pain with my crew !
