tjones87 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Picked up the Lindberg 32 Ford 3n1 kit the other day as a Christmas present. Since I am waiting on parts to get in for my 49 merc, i figured I would mess around with it to kill some time. After opening it, the engine was the first thing that was going to be changed. I assembled the Mopar engine that came along with the Merc. I first had the engine flat black, but after seeing a t-bucket online that had a purple 440, I repainted it. After test fitting the engine in the frame, I had no kind of motor mount. After looking at the kit engine, it had these little prongs on it that slipped around a spot on the frame. Took awhile, but got them cut off and positioned were they needed to be and glued them to the frame. sorry for the blurry pic, camera wouldn't focus... a few shots with motor positioned in the frame and body on to check firewall clearance. coming together slowly.. more to come...just got body, frame and a few pieces painted..will post pics later (possibly tomorrow sometime)... Thanks for checking this out and let me know what you think..any suggestions or opinions are appreciated.
tjones87 Posted December 26, 2011 Author Posted December 26, 2011 (edited) Went through all the pics I took and these were the better ones. I used Createx Opaque green and turned out pretty good. Is my first time using createx paints, and seem to like them so far....still need to get a clear to put over everything...will pick it up later on... the flat black pieces are testors enamel painted with a brush. and rear end and front axle are testors aluminum enamel. still unsure on seat color..white or black? let me know what you think of the build so far... rmvw guy Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 (edited) I vote for white or maybe cream on the interior. The engine may really help this kit along the right direction. After seeing yours, I checked my quick build of this kit and the only thing I really liked from this kit were the wheels with the moon style discs. It was an over simplified kit from the early years but, still a fun build with a great look from a distance. Under the car is room for a small electric motor. If you can turn this car into anything else worth looking closely at I will be watching. Good luck. Edited December 26, 2011 by vw guy
tjones87 Posted December 26, 2011 Author Posted December 26, 2011 (edited) I like the idea for a cream interior...I also noticed the room under the body, but don't have anything that will fit under it at the moment, so will get to that later on maybe...I have to make a driveshaft, as the trans is quite a bit longer than the kit trans. I am going for the hot rod look with minimum chrome. I am making my own headers by using the kit headers but customizing them to fit this engine (is going to be the hardest part of build) your build looks great..i also like the wheels/tires in this kit, but think i am going to be using some wider white walls out back (still unsure and havent got them in the mail yet) Any idea what all the extra parts are for? they aren't pictured on the build sheets...maybe some kind of stand or something? will try and get a pic of them for clarification Edited December 26, 2011 by tjones87
tjones87 Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 ended up not getting any clear today, but did do a little paint work to the body (got bored and wanted to break up the green a little bit. these are the extra pieces that came with the kit that I was talking about...any idea what they are?
rmvw guy Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I believe those parts are to install a small electric motor and battery with gear drive. Probably universal parts supplied in a lot of the early kits, as this is a reissue from the very early days. The models were running toys when completed often times. Those moons would really look good on another car, maybe a 37 Ford dry lakes car I'm thinking. You have a fun build going there. I will check back later, please keep it going.
tjones87 Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 Still no clear coat, but got the tires in the mail today. Also scratched around in my parts box and found some old Cragars I think I am going to use. Seem to fit the styling of this build. I also have some fat/skinny wheels and tires on the way...might see what they look like before deciding on anything. Got some paint for the interior ordered, should be here by the weekend (only thing about ordering online I hate).....here are a few pics to update the build...thanks again also is a pic of the headers I made. I wasn't too crazy about the strap along the bottom, but only way I knew to keep them together.
VW Dave Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I like the Cragars against the whitewalls, and I think they'll look the business with the green body. The purple engine block might make it look like one of Barney's cars, however. My only suggestion is to paint the whitewall inserts with something like Tamiya 'racing white,' which is a slightly off-white; even when brandy new or freshly cleaned, real whitewalls aren't white white.
tjones87 Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 thanks for the tip on the white walls, will see about doing something to them. I am debating on using the rear fenders that came with the kit. The rear tires are a little farther away from the body than I'd like and think they would fill in the gap... I will get some pics of it mocked up with and without the fenders on in a little bit. As far as the motor goes, i already have the one side of the headers glued on, so color will stay. Even though I kind of like it, is something different from all the red, yellow or blue engines you usually see. thanks
tjones87 Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 got the rear axle with wheels/tires mocked up. the driver side with fender on and passenger side with out it...let me know what you think. I am leaning farther toward putting the fenders on... will be getting pics of the engine with headers once the other side dries...thanks
Harry P. Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I agree on a cream colored interior, that would look nice.
tjones87 Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) Got the headers finished...not perfect, but best I could do..had to change them up from my first design...the strap of styrene would hold them together like I had planned. let me know what you think....will probably be all I do until I get some clear. I will probably get to wally world tomorrow or may hit up ACE...thanks Edited December 28, 2011 by tjones87
tjones87 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 (edited) ok picked up some clear and got the body and pieces cleared. Just finished drying so snapped a few pics...the green look a little brighter than it actually is because of the flash...Once the build is complete I will get better pics of it outside. Here are a few pics of ll the pieces I have assembled...Hoping to have it finished by the weekend (if tan paint for the seat gets here on time) thanks again for checking this build out...as always comments or suggestions are appreciated.... I used Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss and it looks great...this is my first build using clear coat...thanks again also going to be mixing my own black wash up to use on wheels, so they don't have the chrome plated plastic look....will get pics of that too... Edited December 29, 2011 by tjones87
tjones87 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Got the rolling chassis assembled just now....the hardest part of the build would have to be all the suspension up from, had to put it all together at the same time whle holding it all in place long enough for the glue to set. Hoping to get paint for the interior soon, will keep you updated...thanks again...
