jarretfan Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 i am finalizing the triple axle peterbilt wrecker and the hood does not fit right. i had to grind off the step on the back of the fenders and they still rub on the air cleaners. which means i cant use the rear mudflaps. also after installing the front bumper then the hood wont tilt. what am i doing wrong .i figured you guys that have been doing this for longer than me may have ran into something like this and would have a helpful hint. also i did not glue the cab into place until i had the sleeper on and the hood on to try and get the right fit lines for the hood.
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 What's goin' on... I built the Alsakin Hauler kit as a tandem day cab and I had that problem too. http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/ViewPhoto?...5436734&f=0 Above is a link to a picture of that truck. Note I didn't use those flaps because of that reason. If you're set on using mud flaps Evergreen Scale makes sheets of black styrene. (I LIKE THAT STUFF) I use that for mud flaps. If ya use .020 it's light and thin enough to give when ya open the hood as opposed to the thick plastic flaps in that kit. Below is another link to an AMT 359 I built (pardon the redunancy I used this as an example in another post) http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/ViewPhoto?...&p=73954954 IF ya look at the flap on the quarter fender that's an example of that black styrene. Now under the fender on the hood I used the same thickness styrene for those flaps only white. I highly recomend you do this instead of using the flaps from that kit. Not only for the above mentioned reasons but using the thin styrene just looks more proportioned to scale. It's not so thick. Needless to say half the time I'll glue the hood shut or not even try to make the hood open. My hands are so big that eventually something will get broken opening/closing the hood for different poses. Once Tim reads your post he'll give ya some good ideas! GOOD LUCK!!!!
jarretfan Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 thanks for the info. after i put on the chrome shields in front of the air cleaners it was even worse. since i am not into engine detailing yet there is no loss not seeing under the hood so on this one the hood will not open and i like the way it looks. the pictures you listed were awesome. i have been working on this truck for 7 months and ready for it to be done. next i want to do a tractor trailer and do faster. catch ya later
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 What's goin' on... I can relate to ya on wanting to wash your hands of a project after several months. A really good kit to build is the Revell 359 (partial snaptite kit) That goes togather really well. I built one using the AMT359 as a donor kit to bash. As for a trailer kit? Take your pick.

I lowered the bumper ..after playing with modified hinges, popping off the cab and sleeper. Nothing worked. I always thought I was the screw up. NOT revell!! Paul
mackinac359 Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 This is why many of my hoods are fixed shut. I'd rather the model look right than have a working feature. Tim

Tim I agree about looking right, but sometimes I get mule headed ! Did anyone try moving the bumper forward with spacers? It's to late for mine. Paul
Old Albion Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 What a pain!!! I have two Revell Pete Wreckers and one or two other Revell trucks awaiting build. Thanks for the warning. When I come to build the wreckers the hoods will be stretched and the bumper re-positioned as a matter of course right at the planning stage. When I got back into model truck building about 3 years ago the first truck I built was the Revell Kenworth Aerodyne. What a pain in the nether regions!! The cab wouldn't fit properly, the floor was all twisted, the doors didn't fit. Aaaarrrgghhh!! :x :x :x But its important to persevere, the result wasn't too bad for a first build in 25 years. As a result of my initial irritations and problems I go about my projects much different these days. Once again Thanks for the warnings. PS The truck looks great.
