Scuderia Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I'm going to take the leap into molding some of my own small bits. One item i've noticed is a reusable mold, as you heat it to get back to liquid state then you can repour as a new mold. OR should I stay away and stick with the traditional 2-part RTV?
shucky Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Stuff I've seen from Japan is called Oyumaru. It looks interesting and I've seen other posts on the subject where guys have been able to make a couple parts from a flat 1 piece mold. Even seen a successful 2 piece mold, but you'll only get a couple (if your lucky) good cast parts from it. If your just making a single part or two for yourself and the part is not very complex it may work out. But other than that, stay with 2 part rubber. There are some good options out there that are user friendly and great for starting out. Check out smooth on's line as some do not require a measuring scale. Good luck!
Scuderia Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 ok right on i was leaning a mor traditional route but thought id ask.
Scorpius1 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Stick to the traditional stuff Larry and please use a silicone or platinum-based RTV. You'll have better results. Take it from somebody that's been around this stuff for about 25 years.
Scuderia Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Yeah i found a really detailed tutorial and it called for silicone RTV and i'll be going with that for sure thanks Robbie
Scorpius1 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) Here is an outstanding Silicone RTV. Easy to use, 1:1 mix and sets up in an hour. The mold life with this still is the longest I've ever worked with! http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1439.l2649 I found this stuff by accident on Ebay and have been using it ever since. I know that not everyone uses Ebay but for the amount of Rubber that you get with this stuff and it's quality, it can't be beat!!!! Edited April 9, 2012 by Scorpius1
Scuderia Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Yeah i use ebay for a lot of my kits i'll check out the description on that. I think i'll be makin a purchase on supplies before months end.
Scorpius1 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Best of luck and if you need any more help just holler!
Scuderia Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 Will do, thanks. There's a few parts in particular that i'd really like to have for prosperity.
