MAGNUM4342 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 If any of you have used it could I get a review and maybe some pictures? I want to know if it's as difficult or easier than Alclad chrome. How does it compare price wise?
martinfan5 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Here are some threads on Spaztic Chrome, not sure if info you want is in them http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58162&hl=%2Bspazstix+%2Bchrome http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=51451&st=0&p=581606&hl=+spazstix%20+chrome&#entry581606 http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=34739&hl=%2Bspazstix+%2Bchrome http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=27287&hl=%2Bspazstix+%2Bchrome
High octane Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Kevin, I have used Spaz-Stix Mirror Chrome on both plastic and resin parts and I'm real happy with the product. I give the parts a light coat of primer and then Krylon Short Cuts Black as a base coat. Then 2 or 3 light coats of Spaz-Stix and there you have it. I have a couple of pictures of the parts I have done with it but I'm having trouble posting them for some reason. I also used this product on my current build that I hope to finish soon.
MAGNUM4342 Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Thank you Nick and Johnathan. The links and pictures are very helpfull. I'm going to try it.
Badluck 13 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Kevin,I just recently got back into the hobby and from my experience I have tried both and have got good results from both, but I like Spazstix much better,I feel its easier to use and my opinion looks more "chrome" like and I was very impressed from Spazstix,I ordered a can on a late Tuesday morning and It was waiting on my door step Wednesday evening when I got home from work.
MAGNUM4342 Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Mike I see you're in Akron Ohio. Is Spazstix near there or did you pay for overnight? That's just wicked fast shipping!
Badluck 13 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Kevin,no I just paid standard shipping because I was in no hurry, their mailing address is in Utah and I don't have the package it was sent in but I thought it was from New Jersey......either way it was flat out fast shipping....
High octane Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 You have to use a black base coat correct? Yes you need a black base coat. Spaz-Stix is made for lexan bodies and one would spray the Spaz-Stix on the inside of the clear lexan body and then use the black after that. We would use it just the opposite way and spray the black on first. BTW, I wouldn't suggest using clear over the Spaz-Stix.
Badluck 13 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Is the finish durable to handling when totally dry? Thats what I also like about it,its very durable ...
crazyjim Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 You guys using the rattle can or airbrush version of Spazstix?

TooOld Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I just took the bait and ordered a can of Ultimate Mirror Chrome . A 3.5 oz can costs $12.99 plus .91 tax plus $8.96 shipping . That's $22.86 for a small can of paint that is probably no better than Krylon or Rustoleum . I hope I am wrong . I will post pictures when I get it .
crazyjim Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 (edited) Whoa, Bob. Where did you order it from? A Main Hobbies has the spray for $9.89 but I didn't get far enough into the order to get delivery costs. Edited May 25, 2012 by crazyjim

If you follow directions with the Spazstix chrome I think you'll be pleasantly surprised- use light coats over a smooth black base coat (they also sell their own base coat black in aerosol) and you'll get chrome-like results, comparable or even better than Alclad. Use too much in heavy coats and the results are more like Testor's chrome spray, so keep it light. http://public.fotki.com/grdeyed/model_cars-1/chrome-test/ ^^ Not my link- posted by member sjordan in another thread on chrome (Alclad, Spazstix).
vintagestang Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 How durable is Spazstix? Could you use it on a real car?
sjordan2 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I wonder if Alclad or SpazStix would work better for a paint job like this on the Fisker that Ellen DeGeneres gave Justin Bieber. (You can actually order a Mercedes SLS AMG from the factory with this kind of finish).
High octane Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Is the finish durable to handling when totally dry? Yes as I haven't noticed any coming off when handling the parts.

I find it a LOT better than Krylon or Rustoleum and that's why I use it. I was able to pick mine up at a hobby shop so I didn't have to pay shipping. Of course I did spend enough on gas.
Ryan S. Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I just got a can of the Mirror Chrome spray myself. I plan on doing some tests with it next week to see what I like best as a base coat etc. I'll post my results when I get them done. I was encouraged by some of the other pictures that were posted by other members. So, we'll see.

About how much was it at the LHS ? I've done some web browsing and I have found it for less than Spaz-Stix charges , but with shipping it still costs $15 - $18 .
crazyjim Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I followed through with A Main Hobbies. They want $9.89 for the rattle can and then $12.49 shipping. No way will pay $22.38 for a can of paint. I'll see if the LHS can get me a can.
sjordan2 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Just don't expect it to look like real chrome, kit chrome or what you would get if you sent it to a place like ChromeTech USA. It's going to look good, but more like polished aluminum than real chrome.
