Billy Kingsley Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I've got a new search for information, for a friend who doesn't own a computer...He wants to build a Penske Trans Am car, but I am not sure if he wants to be building a Camaro or a Corvette. I know he's looking for some Sunoco Blue paint if that helps. He wants to know if there are any better decals then Fred Cady's... Thanks!!

The 2 easiest to build would be the 66 Sunoco Vette just released or the 68/69 Camaros. I have built the 69 Camaro using the Perry's resin trans kit. Just let me know what you need to know.
Modelmartin Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 MCW has the Sunoco blue paint. Fred Cady's decals work just fine. The Perry's 69 Camaro is excellent. I believe Randy Derr did the pattern and He should know that car real well! Trans Am would have to be a Camaro or a Javelin. The Corvettes were endurance racers.
rollover Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I'm gathering parts and Info myself to build a '69 Penske Camaro. I was suprised to see they used the factory door panels! I thought they would have made aluminum panels.

Randy Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 . I was suprised to see they used the factory door panels! I thought they would have made aluminum panels. Not only did they have door panels, they had fully functional windows. The entire body was acid dipped, early in the year the vinyl tops on the Camaros were structural, roof was a little thin.
Modelmartin Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 One of the other fun facts about the Penske '69 Camaros was that they were their '68s but reskinned with '69 sheetmetal. Makes it kind of hard for someone to claim they have one of the original 68s. I think the 67s are floating around out there.
directorboy Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 (edited) Billy, here's a good website for the historic Trans-Am series. http://historictransam.com/homepage.htm Lots of pictures. I saw them last Sept at the Glen. Sweet! Mark Donohue wrote a great book titled The Unfair Advantage. Some reference pics in it for Trans-Am but the book is an autobiography so it covers his racing career. Edited August 12, 2007 by directorboy

My web site has a page showing a '69 Penske Camaro I did long ago (1991) and some reference pix I took at the '69 Mid-Ohio Trans-Am race. Randy Derr will forgive me, I hope, for telling the story of how surprised he was at the Toledo NNL to see the light gray door jambs in the picture below. The restored car, of which he had shot about 40 million pictures for his 1:12 scale version, had dark blue jambs and that's the way he did his 1:12 model. More Here.
