jcbigpaw Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) Don't let the paint get you down. I've done several beautiful paint jobs in a row just to totally blow the next one. It happens. I use Rustoleum spray cans for paint, primer and clear. I don't sand my clear though just polish it with Meguires. I've found that with paint its better to shoot a light "mist" coat followed quickly by a light coverage coat. I'll follow that up with a couple addition light coats allowing the previous coat to just set up for a few minutes. After paint I don't touch it again for a few weeks before clearing it and then it sits again before polishing. Seems to work for me but again, stuff happens. Edited October 5, 2012 by jcbigpaw
BluePopsicle Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) Thanks Colin, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I drink so much coffee that I get the shakes sometimes. I appreciate the kind words Joe. I try not to let it get to me. Just gets frustrating. Luckily, I'm using nail polish for body paint, so it's a little forgiving. I'll be tackling the engine, exhaust and body paint this weekend. More pics to come. Edited October 5, 2012 by BluePopsicle
BluePopsicle Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 You have some really nice looking models Joe. I just took a peak at your gallery. PS...There was something else I wanted to say about something, but I can't for the life of me, remember what it was....
eizzle Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Very nice. It's getting to the fun part. I always enjoyed the small details the most.
BluePopsicle Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Got the car in silver base today. This evening, I should be able to get the blue sprayed.
BluePopsicle Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Progress update... Got the blue sprayed. First pic is pretty cool. It's two coats over a silver base.
eizzle Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 That's pretty. That first pic does look pretty cool, what color paint did you use?
BluePopsicle Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 It's nail polish. Silver Base: Wet n Wild Fastdry - Silvivor #236C Metallic Blue: Sinful Colors Professional - Ciao Bella! #989
eizzle Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 That's right, now I remember you saying you we're using nail polish. I'm gonna have to try that, I've got a 12 year old and my wife that both love to paint their nails, I could do some crazy paint jobs!
BluePopsicle Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 It's a boat load cheaper too. Walgreens' frequently has 0.99 cent sales on Sinful Colors and Dollar General has L.A. Colors every day price at 0.99 cents. One .44 oz bottle of polish will yield about 1 fl oz of paint once reduced.
BluePopsicle Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 Question: Should I do stripes or leave it plain blue?
eizzle Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Personally, I like Shelby style stripes, but it's your build.
ll Brandon ll Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 (edited) Wow, that blue is just beautiful. I wish I had an airbrush so I could play with some wild colors, lol. In due time. The engine looks awesome too. What color did you use for the silver? Looks very realistic. I would leave it just blue. That color is just awesome, stripes would ruin it imo. BluePopsicle Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 Brandon, thank you for the kind words. The silver is just Testors silver enamel. I brushed it over the chrome to give it a little extra shine. =) I just use nail polish on the bodies.
ll Brandon ll Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Ive tried brushing over chrome and the paint never sticks and ends up with brush streaks in it. Whats your secret?
BluePopsicle Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 I use a fine horsehair brush. Plastic (or other synthetic) bristles will leave streaks like crazy.
BluePopsicle Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Ok, the update on this is....there isn't one. Since I do all my airbrushing outside; my work is very dependent on the weather. Today it's quite windy and we're expecting thunderstorms later this afternoon. My goal though (weather permitting) is to paint the stripes and add some ghost flames behind the front wheel wells. Edited October 14, 2012 by BluePopsicle
dimebolt Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Yeah, yeah! Blame it on the weather! LOL Just kidding man. Weather had been crazy here for the last couple of days too. Makes it difficult to get any painting done. Looking good man. Just be patient, it'll all be worth it. Corey
eizzle Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Hey bro, where are you from? I've got the same weather forecast!
BluePopsicle Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 I'm from Louisville, KY. Right in the heart of the Ohio Valley.
eizzle Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Ok, I'm from west central Indiana. Only a few hours away.
BluePopsicle Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 Alright, I braved the wind and sprayed some color anyway. I'm quite pleased with it and I hope you all like it. Next weekend, I should be shooting some clear on it.;
