topher5150 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 flipping through E-bay today and saw quite a few Mustang GTOs for sale, and thinking some day I'd like to build one. Are there any out there that are better than another or are they about the same?
Scuderia Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 That's a good question. I have two of the Motorcraft GTO's but haven't seen the box contents of the Other ones and kinda wondered the same thing; Anyone?
IMSANUT Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 All of the kits, the three Roush GTO cars, and the three T/A cars, as well as the two Camaro T/A cars are mostly the same inside the box. All feature a great small block Ford engine, a good representation of the Bob Riley designed chassis, and very complete markings. The GTO trio differ only in that the Folgers car has an earlier style rear spoiler, and all three feature an opening rear hatch, though they are also sometimes warped. The three Mustang T/A kits are all the same with newer bodies and chassis extensions to widen the chassis to match the wider body width. Also featured are newer headers and exhausts exiting both sides of the car. The two Camaro T/A kits of course feature Camaro bodies, but also feature later style BBS rims. It has a Ford Motor though. All that said, all of the kits have a bad history of warped chassis plates. These flatten out fine if you take care in assembling the frame sides and other parts of the roll cage carefully. One note of interest, the T'A cars should have the center of the chassis plate from infront of the engine to the rear end opened up between the fram members. The SCCA required this to be open as it would be on a street car. IMSA did not require this. A couple of interesting asides regarding these kits. As mentioned, the chassis was designed by Bob Kiley of Riely and Scott fame. It appeared under many a race car. From the cars represented in these kits, to the trans kit mentioned, a Mekur, Olds Cutlas, Mercury Cougar, Buick Sommerset, and the Kemp Cobra Mustang II. I believe it also served as the chassis for the wideb body Quick Greenwood Corvettes. Skins offered the IMSA Olds Aurora as a trans kit for any of the T/A kits. It is a wonderful transkit. I hope that they re introduce it now that they have teamed up with M&S hobbies. There was also a later era Mustang body and a Jaguar body with updated roll cages available. Any of these kits build into a wonderful replica, but it is not a simple build.
Scuderia Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Thanks for the insight, I figured if anyone knew the skinny on these it'd be you.
